It doesn't matter who you are, and especially what your politics are or what your religion is. Christmas has become far more than a celebration of the Sun God Mithras or the birth of a child named Jesus. It's become a day of many combined legends and all of them are about one thing: Peace on Earth and goodwill toward men.
Over the millennia and through the centuries, these ancient legends and rites have come together on this one day. On Christmas day we have Saint Nicholas, our Santa Claus, who started the tradition of Christmas giving by putting candies in the shoes of children, on Christmas Eve. In those days, in Germany, people left their shoes out on the stoop.
We have the Yule Log and the Christmas tree, and both have come down through the many centuries to stay with us as treasured rites, regardless of how we worshiped, or didn't.
Since then, we've added steadily to the richness of Christmas, with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, The Grinch That Stole Christmas, the classic poem The Night Before Christmas, classic songs like Silent Night, Jingle Bells, I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas and many more. The list just keeps growing, because for all the complaining about the commercialization of Christmas and the bickering over "Happy Holidays" versus "Merry Christmas", the t***h is Christmas will always be with us as a day of giving, of the joining of hands and clinking of glasses in friendship and love.
We are so very fortunate to live in this time, when all these things have combined to give us the most wonderful day of the year.
I've always loved Christmas. The smell of the Christmas tree, decorating it, buying and wrapping presents, watching the faces light up when they're opened.
Only a few are left of all those I shared Christmases with, the rest have gone to their rests, but the love remains along with the memories and "I'll drink a cup of kindness yet" to those long gone, on Christmas day.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
And Happy Chanukah.
Merry Christmas to all the others.
