Pope Francis, though Left-leaning is a good and gentle man. He is a Jesuit.

The Jesuits, except for their altercation with Galileo, were instrumental in bringing about the Scientific Revolution, a European "invention" or "discovery" or innovation in thinking. (And, no, black Africans did not bring enlightenment to Europe following the Dark Ages. That all b****s, New World and Old World, have no difficulty in believing this, says something for their suggestibility.)

A good book to read if you're interested in the Scientific Revolution, is Heilbron's "Elements of Early Modern Physics", which has much admiration for the Jesuit approach to Science. With a capital S.

The book concludes with the case history of discoveries and experiments in electricity, mentioning one "gallant" scientific "experimenter" that was so enamored of the discipline, he shocked his own wife.
