Personally, I think inflation is done on purpose. I could be wrong, but the end result of serious inflation is a reduction of independent minded hard working people, especially small businesses. And family farms.

We got hit hard by the inflation of the Carter years. We had an average size dairy farm in Wisconsin, average being 40 milking cows back then. We were doing OK with interest rates at 5%. Then inflation set in and fuel costs doubled, property tax went way up. Cost of parts and machinery sky rocketed and the price of milk dropped $2 per hundred pounds. SO, the Government, in it’s infinite wisdom, decided to raise interest rates all the way up to 18%. There is not a calculator in the world that can make this come out, so whole neighborhoods went under.

It went like this. First, you use up all of your cash reserves just to keep going. Then you extend your credit to the limit. Then you borrow against the equity in your property. With high interest rates and less ability to pay due to inflated costs of living and doing business, you quickly end up in foreclosure. The bankers told us we had no choice but to have an auction and they took every penny of it. And because land values had dropped to near zero you could not even sell out to pay the mortgage, so many people, if they could find a job, found the bank taking a big chunk of their paycheck to pay off the loan because the auction did not bring in enough money.

I fought back. There were only two lawyers in the entire state who would work for the farmer. I was fortunate that one was close by, and he did a terrific job. He liked my attitude and helped me get a job as the project Director for the Neighbor to Neighbor Farm Support Group. My job was to find ways to help these folks, get information from the Lawyer and hold meetings , by invitation only, to get the help and info out to the people. It was quite an experience and we had a lot of success. We were able to help people through the bankruptcy, help them find jobs, and in at least two cases, stopped suicides. We also had food drives for desperate families and much more

But the reason I say that inflation is probably done on purpose is that during those years of fighting the system, we saw time after time where the small or average farmer was foreclosed on while a few select farmers in the area who were going bigger, were NOT foreclosed on, had debt forgiven and in fact got Government money to buy more land, buy more cows, etc.
So 40 years later when C***d hit, who suffered the most? Small business, independent operators, etc while the big guys such as the big chain stores and big Pharma made obscene amounts of money. C***d is barely over and inflation sets in and more small independent folks are hurt again.. Net result; Less independent small businesses, a shrinking middle class and the “big guys” making obscene profits.

There is not doubt that a certain class of people in this world love power and control of others and will stop at nothing to accomplish their purpose. Our founder warned us against these, but we let them take over anyway. I just hope and pray that it is not too late for America to recover from all of this, but t***h be told, it does not look very promising.

Without the FED and government involvement in the economy we would probably have little inflation. The free market would self correct prices.

I remember so well. Worked for Thomson-McKinnon Securities...sold just under a million dollars worth of AAA tax-free 15% bonds to the richest man in Utah. Carter was considered the worst president...until Biden came along. Back then, 21% interest rates. And then we got the best of the best, Mr. Reagan.

This is the worst inflation in nearly 40 years.
But it was so much worse back then
But, as those older Americans can tell you, as unwelcome as it is for consumers, today’s price increases are nowhere near as bad as they were in the 1970s and early 1980s.
And most importantly for policymakers trying to deal with today’s price hikes, what fed the double-digit price increases in those days is not a factor today — nor are they likely to be ever again.

I agree that it was much worse back then. There was a time when fuel was hard to find and jobs for those who were driven off the farms and small businesses were harder to find. But we are not done yet. Wait until more people are maxed out on their credit cards and see what happens.

Dems are not big on National defense. Why would they be if they are trying to destroy America anyway?

What did you do after losing that job?
