What a race for anyone who enjoys watching the horses run! Flightline, a 4 year old wins the race by 8 lengths! Some have compared him to Secretariat, although he didn’t win by 31 lengths! This will probably be his last race, they say. The owners are going to only sale 2 1/2 percent! Can you imagine what they’ll make on his stud fees? ☺️

I seriously doubt he’s anything like Secretariat (or Seattle Slew for that matter) however that was a great finish! Loved it!

I loved watching the people! So many were hoping he would win! I agree, Secretariat will be hard to match, but he certainly is in the running! They showed the race, after the race, from a drone! It was much more impressive from that view! I’d like to see more races seen from that view!

The first race was an exciting one also! It was a nostril finish instead of a nose finish for two of them. There were actually three horses that finished nose to nose! ☺️

I wish I saw those races. I got stuck watching a bad football game.

Drones open up a whole new dimension.

Speaking of close races, do you remember Affirmed and Alydar in the Triple Crown? The Belmont was won by a nose. Great race

One of the greatest races ever. That whole Triple Crown had those two horses going neck and neck and winning by a nose, neck and half length. I'll never forget watching that Belmont race, in a smoky bar on a tiny TV. After two very close races these two horses squared off again. Quickly to the front they raced neck and neck the entire way. And the horse on the outside, Alydar, had a slightly longer way to go being on the outside. And that was the difference in the finish.

And the whole time we were watching that very close race, cheering on and on,. there was one brain dead i***t right in front of me playing pinball, and he never, even once, looked up from his game. Go figure.

I preferred Alydar to Affirmed. He never gave up. I remember a race Seattle Slew was in where he and another horse went too fast for too long and he was overtaken at the end (his only loss) but he had started inching his way back up. That horse had a lot of heart too.

I wonder if Alydar would have won the Triple Crown if there had been no Affirmed - or if Sham would have if there had been no Secretariat. Its interesting to speculate. All were great.

Secretariat was the best from my viewpoint and he did lose a race or two in his lifetime. But I once saw an article of great horses in history. From around the world. Different categories and different countries and different quality of competition. Some were really fabulous and could give Secretariat competition for greatest ever. But hard to find any horse that could ever beat that Belmont race in the Triple Crown. Another horse I looked at was Dam Patch, a trotter or pacer, none of the two. He lowered the record by about five seconds during his career and even beat thoroughbreds.

But it is fun watching the truly great reach their peak over the years. To bad so many retire to stud so soon. John Henry was another great one and he kept racing. Had the record winnings. And we can't forget Seabiscuit.

The Breeders Cup slipped up on me this year. My local paper, sprts section, the Chicago Tribune, has turned into nothing but a free advertisement for the major sports teams in Chicago, and they had ZERO coverage of the breeders cup. They treat the Tour de France the same way. Bare mention of the Triple Crown. It used to get day to day stories leading up to them and great stories after.

Have a nice day. It was fun reminiscing.

It is fun remembering back, especially when you get our age! After reading the rest of this thread today, I remembered being very young and our family stopping to see a famous old racing horse somewhere that was in another state! I remember going through a big entrance and one of those, Home of so and so! I think I remember the word “War”, but I’m not sure. I googled famous thoroughbred race horses in the 40’s. I first thought of Man Of War but he would have been too old in approximately 1954 to 58. After a little more digging, War Admiral, who was the son of Man of War, fit the bill! He would have been 23 years old in 1957. He died in 58.

He won the Kentucky Derby in 1937…..won another race 4 days later that was a mile and a quarter!! He won the Triple Crown that year and won Horse of the Year! The next year Seabiscuit beat him!

I remember going into a big barn with many stalls……..looking up at a gigantic ugly head and one of his hooves was big, thick and misshaped! He was old and crippled at that time. Being born and raised on a ranch all I knew at that time was quarter horses! I was not impressed with this big ugly headed horse! LOL! And that is all I can remember!

I grew up watching horse racing with my Dad. I was the 3rd child born after Daddy came home from the War. My sisters had grown up and left home by the time I was about 10……after that I got Daddy all to myself! LOL! I always think of him and can still see him get excited at a good race! We continued to watch the races together for the rest of his life……and if I didn’t watch one, he certainly told me about it!

I didn’t watch those, but I spent about 2 hours watching them and several other of the older races on YouTube ! One video had all ten races between Affirmed and Alydar in that one video! It was pretty much just a two horse race in the races that they were in! That was a good year for avid horse racing fans! Once they got to that last stretch they left the rest of the pack in their dust! In 77’ Jack and I had been married one year, we had two eight year old and one six year old, he was a firefighter, and we had a business! I didn’t watch much TV! LOL!

He must have been a pinball wizard. I prefer horses. Running, cutting, reining, or roping.
