My argument against the 17th Amendment

Prior to the passage of the 17th Amendment, all Senators to the United States Congress were appointed by their perspective state legislators. The arguments for and against state legislators appointing U.S. Senators were many, however the arguments for direct e******n of Senators by the citizen of the state prevailed and the amendment was ratified on April 8, 1913.

Over the years I’ve become a believer that the wisdom of our founding fathers has proven to be much superior to the changes that have been implemented over the following years by lesser brains.

Our founders believed that these Senators would better serve the interest of their individual States and uphold the Tenth Bill of Rights, which of course limits the power of the federal government which had little power over the states. The body of government closest to the people would be those individuals that were elected by a majority of the citizens of that State; therefore a majority of congressmen from that State should select the two individuals that would serve as their U.S. Senators.

The evidence of the wisdom of our founders could not be more evident than by the actions of our Senators today. They are no more than Political Party Hacks. They v**e mostly on a Party line with little or no respect for the concerns of the citizens of their State. Their lack of concern for States Rights has completely destroyed the 10th Amendment which limited the Federal power over the individual citizen. The 17th Amendment is just one of the many reasons and changes to our constitution that cause us to live under a Dictatorship today.

The only reason they wanted to go to a popular v**e was because they could con the people much easier then the State legislators. The people also would not recall them if they went against the State, so they could pretty much do anything they wanted, and do.

They were elected directly by the State so the State had equal representation in this government. The Civil War was fought over State rights, NOT S***ERY. Even with their representation in the government, they would loosing their authority with the government and they decided to succeed from the union as a last ditch effort to keep the federal government off their backs.

The year 1913 stands out as the year we finally lost all sense and gave in to the government and their desire to build a government to make them the all powerful force behind the socialist and the rest of the clowns that wanted to build a power base against which we had no voice. 1913 was also the year we got screwed with the federal reserve and our money has suffered ever since and all we have managed to do is make some people VERY rich. Kennedy was shot because he was going to do away with the FED and they couldn't allow that to happen.

Thanks for your thoughts. This is a tough one for me as I see merits on both sides. One thing concerns me is that if they are appointed by the states' legislatures would they fall inder the control of the state party bosses and still not represent the people?

Today we have fallen to mob rule.

Your senator is more likely to be chosen by the editorial board of the NY Times than by your neighbors.

Their criteria are the lowest common denominators.

Take gay marriage for example, 31 states v**ed against by referendum and it is still being foisted on the people.

You are right on! Great history lesson. Also the Constitution would never had been ratified had the States for one minute thought they never had the right to succeed. Huck

The more power we remove from a few and give to the people
the better off we are. I believe the real failure comes from ignorant people. They fail to know what they v**e for.

Corruption can occur at any level, however with this argument you're back to first base. There will be an another e******n that should correct your concern as long as the citizens of that state remain politically educated. Huck

That is exactly what would occur here in beautiful Mexifornia. Actually, it would make no difference here as the majority of the v****g citizenry and non-citizens are l*****t in their beliefs.

That is the problem. No matter how we do it corruption raises its ugly head. Term limits would help, but that will never happen.

I've always had mixed feelings concerning Term limits. I've always believed it is the right of each citizen to v**e for whoever they think can best represent their political beliefs regardless of their time as an elected official. Also term limits would attack those that jump in just long enough to feather their own nest with little or no concern their country or their constituents. They only have to be honest long enough to convince you to v**e for them. However term limits would eliminate many of the problems we are now encountering. The answer is to revamp our education system and reeducate the American once again in basic civics that would instill a rebirth of good old fashion Patriotism. Huck
