OK, I like to eat things that the health profession says is not good for me. Ice cream comes to my mind. I eat it every once in a great while, I do not gorge myself on it, I just a scoop or two.
Should I be looking for a cardiologist to scrape out my arteries?

Red meat, is alleged to be bad for me. OK...now what do I eat? Red peppers, although alright, do not take the place of a good steak every once in a while. I do not drill the stuff into my stomach, I eat a small steak every once and again.

here's my question: when did eating food, become a walk through a minefield?

The food guidelines seem to change every six or so months, so is anything it says, to be believed; or should we just live until we die?

I am aware that strokes, and the like, could be waiting for me, but a bland diet, full of water-chestnuts, and wheat germ grass, is just not all that appetizing a thought for me. :-(

It is my belief that we all have a number, when our number is up no matter if it is food or a mack truck it is your turn.

I could go into the story of my grandpa who lived to 94 but I'm sure you have heard the story.

Life is short, eat what you enjoy, love the Lord with all you are and your neighbor as yourself. You will be healthy.

I had this conversation with a family member. She was fussing because her granddaughter (with whom she lives) will not allow her to have chocolate ice cream. I confess, I sneak it in to her. She told me that in her day, ice cream was treat and made at home from real milk. Not something that now passes for ice cream. Well our debate went back and forth with me telling her that her diet is watched carefully so we can have her around for longer. Her response, what is the purpose of living if you can not eat what you want from time to time? Indeed, she went further and said, life would not be as complete if old women could not complain. I have to give her that one.....being that she will be 101 in December!

My father-in-law had heart problems and was diabetic. He constantly heard if you eat that you are going to die, he finally had enough of it and said "well I'm not going to die hungry!" he lived to be 82

I worked as a nurse in nursing homes a time or two and was always disgusted by the "diets" some of my patients were on. A "no added salt" meal is unpalatable, so my patients lost weight and were frequently ill. I added salt on the sly and fixed the problem. Someone told on me, so when I was called on the carpet for it, I said " these people are already locked up in old folks prison. Torturing them by making them eat crap, is a violation of their civil rights. If they die a little earlier because they ate salt, but enjoyed their remaining days a little more, who's to complain? " I got fired anyway for "violating facility protocol".

My point is, find your joy where you can. Eat what you want, but in moderation. We're going to die anyway, we might as well go out happy.

My grandfather, on the paternal side, was a sly old fox. He always wanted to be shot by a jealous 20 year old's husband. Well that was his joke. Anyway, he always told me to do what is pleasant, eat well and as much as you need. Do wh**ever, but do it in moderation. And of course remember my manners, put God first, family second, country third and be generous with friends. He passed away after my father. Papa was elderly, Grandfather was probably around when Moses received the Laws. No, serious .... no one knew his exact age.... he was born in the 1800s and at home. He had all his natural teeth, was sharp as a tack, but as slow as a snail in gate.

Anyone locked up in one of those places should at the very least have good meals, they are not there to get better.

I see your point. Most of these places only warehouse the elderly while the morgue makes room. I am not saying that all elderly should be at home, but as many of them as possible should be allowed to be home and surrounded by those that love them. I can not say for sure, but I think one of the reasons that we have Centenarians.....a lot of them in our family, is because we do not put them away. Even those that require full time help.....

I had a great aunt who lived in a nursing home in a small town, it wasn't too bad because everyone knew everything. She wanted an egg for breakfast and when they told her she had to eat oatmeal, she told them to call her son, she was moving out, she wasn't going to eat gruel, from that day on no more problems getting her egg

"Healthy eating", seems to have become an oxymoron of late.
Almost everything that we eat or drink, seems to have some form of dangerous aspect to its makeup. How can we feel safe in placing anything in our mouths, when it al is genetically modified, or full of poisons which were added in order to "protect" the food while it was growing in the ground?

I asked my great-grandfather, (who lived to be 106 years of age!) how he did it. He said: "I made love when I wanted to, to whoever would let me, of course; I ate everything I ever wanted to eat, I drank whiskey, everyday, (sometime too much! ;)) and I never listened to rules that seemed to make no sense to me!"

The day before he dies; he and his thirty-five year old girlfriend; made love, went bicycling, and he ate a steak dinner. After all of this; he called the family around him, gave them all a kiss an lecture on living happily.

He said that he had done everything he ever wanted to do. He thanked his girlfriend for allowing him to "REALLY" enjoy his last day. Told us that he would only see the sun rise one more time; asked his girlfriend if his last night, would be able to compare to his last day, and ate a big bowl of ice cream.

he told us a lot more about his life, and our family. Around ten that night, he told us he was ready to get his "last night of humanity, over with"; took his girlfriend by the hand, said his goodnights, and went up to his room.

he woke up, watched the sunrise, drank a glass of whiskey, "Basil Hayden's" and went to his death, in his favorite rocking chair, while holding his favorite dog in his lap.

The man, knew how to live, so of course, he died on his own terms.
Not story; a t***hful account, of how a 106 y/o man, lived it his own way.

I hope I have a lot of that old-man, in me.
