New Theory: Mental illness caused by child abuse

In 2006, my mother pulled a knife on my father and accused him of attempting to poison her. 2 months later, my mother was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and put on powerful anti-psychotic medication. My parents marriage survived, and until present day my mother has acted relatively "normal". That is, until my father sent an e-mail out to my sisters and I staying my mother has "relapsed". Either the medication quit working or she quit taking it.

Now, my mother is being tormented daily by a "Mr Keystone". Mr Keystone exists only in her imagination, but his intentions are evil. He is stalking her, following her everywhere. He teases and taunts her. He is threatening to k**l her. And my father, of course, is in "cahoots" with this Mr Keystone and is plotting with him against her. They "meet" on a regular basis and call each other on the telephone. Thus my mother, petrified for her life, has locked herself in the bedroom, on her knees, begging for God to protect her from these evil men out to harm her.

As my father well knows, Mr Keystone does not exist and he is at a loss as to what to do.

Searching online, I came across a new theory on the cause of schizophrenia: child abuse.

My mother's father was a violent man. He physically abused my mother's brothers violently, and beat the "hell" out of them. He did not physically nor sexually abuse my mother, but he did tease, taunt, and threaten her. She spent her young childhood exposed to all sorts of violence and threats. When her father passed away in 1980, she began to show the first signs of schizophrenia but was not diagnosed until 2006.

Dr Read states that when a young child is exposed to violence on a continual basis, it permanently alters the developing brain, leading to all sorts of mental illness, schizophrenia being only one. Instead of medication, Dr Read says, these people need extensive therapy to fully confront and deal with their previous abuse. You see, my mother no longer has her father around to threaten her. Yet, because she has not completely dealt with her abuse, her mind has "created" an "imaginary" abuser as a "substitute" for her real abuser, which was her father. Now, why would someone do that? Because their brain has been permanently altered by their previous abuse.

In 2006, my mother pulled a knife on my father and... (show quote)

I am truly very sorry about your Mother. I also agree child abuse leads to mental illness. I have spent my entire adult life depressed. My siblings also fight depression. We were all abused by both parents in different manners. My father a raging alcoholic grabbed me one time ,and ran out into the hallway
With me and hung me upside down over the deep
Part of the stairway. Why? He wanted my Mother to
Drink with him and she had refused. To this day I break out in a sweat every time I get near a stairway or foot stool. Someone has to walk up the steps
In front of me and behind me or I can not move on the stairs. My Mother felt the need to be heavy handed with the 5 of us kids after my father deserted us. She felt total control of our life's was needed to keep us out of trouble with the law. If we ever refused her orders it was only once. We all grew to be perfect law abiding citizens. Matter of fact 3 of us are in law enforcement.

I could type for hours of the abuses that went on in my home but I won't bore you with details. We all to this day take antidepressants, one of us is even bipolar.

So does child abuse cause mental illness, you betcha!!!

...not schizophrenia. There is strong likelihood that it was caused by a v***l infection in vitro.

My mother-in-law is mentally ill, paranoid and kind of scary. We no longer have anything to do with her. My wife doesn't want her around our kids and she told us to leave her alone. I am completely and utterly willing to provide that request. It's unfortunate, but that is the story of mental illness bad beginning very sad ending, unfortunately. Society at large believes that mental illness is something brought onto someone because of bad karma or demonic possession. This attitude guarantees poor success in helping people...who wander our streets....muttering to themselves... and then one day they lash out in pointless violence.

It is interesting to note that children of schizophrenics like my mother are 50% more likely to develop it themselves. However, when abuse is absent from the home, they NEVER develop it. My sisters and I were not abused as children, and we are illness-free even with a first-generation relative afflicted.

Depressive disorder, I am very sorry about that. Dr Read specifically mentions that, as well bi-polar, anxiety disorder, multiple personality disorder and others. I am curious if he is onto something. Is the real culprit abuse, not "chemical imbalance" as it has been sold to the public by drug companies?

...being depressed is hardly a comparable (albeit crippling mental illness) mental illness. Let me know the next time you hallucinate.....Bipolar(ism) tends to run in families and can be caused from damage to the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, but again, it is deeply, genetically ingrained.

The only disease they have confirmed DNA for is Alzheimer's. Otherwise, they have found NO genetic DNA for ANY mental illness. Instead, mental health issues tend to run in families because the CYCLE OF ABUSE gets passed down from generation to generation.

However, you are right. Brain damage can cause mental issues. I saw this once with a girl that had a chemical poured in her drink and wound up in the hospital. She became insane after that.

Mentally ill people can be dangerous, so that is wise. But what your in-law needs is help not isolation, which makes things worse. Yet your hands are tied, you really cannot FORCE her to get help unless she threatens to harm herself or others.

I have several, yes, several friends who are bipolar. She has been assured that the pathology is genetic. The mitochondrial DNA carries the information. It is rare for it to be caused by other physical problems.

I can find the data if you wish, but generally it is one the easiest mental illnesses to diagnose because, usually the mother is the carrier, hence the reason it is traced to the mitochondrial DNA.

I am sorry for your troubles; I know what its like. But I am not going to get into that. Studies show that children living in poverty often have deficient growth of the brain, primarily the frontal lobe. The effects of stress, especially on those in early developmental stages, alter brain patterns and formations. Certain functions of the brain get diminished will other parts of the brain become more active. As adrenalin is increased to deal with stresses, the foundation for later addiction are laid. To dismiss this scientific fact in treatment and sentencing and looking for solutions is unjust.

Absolutely, and the "help" under her misguided judgement of the world is causing her to behave even worse.

I am female, I have no bipolar in my family. My daughter, however, was sexually assaulted and is now bipolar. She didn't get it from me, like I said there is schizophrenia in my family, but ZERO bipolar disorder.

My daughter showed NO signs of bipolar ism nor anxiety disorder, both of which she is now being treated for, until the sexual assault.

People are told it is genetic in therapy so that the drug companies make money. My bet are that your friends also have a background of abuse. Curious to find out.

If she ever does threaten violence to you or to herself, you can get the state to act and force her into care.

Not saying they don't. In studies of those children in poverty and those of the middle class and upper class, there was a highly significant lack of frontal lobe development in the children of poverty, contributed to the stresses inherent in that condition.

Oh, I do think brain damage can contribute to mental illness. I don't believe genetics do.

I also think violence and abuse affects the brain in a very negative way, contributing to mental illness as well. Would you say violence does NOT affect the brain?
