Ben Carson Should NOT Run For President

Jon Dougherty / Sep 30, 2014

Our view: Ben Carson does not have the political acumen to be president--

While ‘outsiders’ are welcome in today’s conservative political climate, presidents need to be experienced, well-rounded individuals because the demands of the job are multi-faceted--

Barack Obama lacked political experience and it shows: Domestic policy is ideologically driven (to the Left), and foreign policy is a mess--

A Dr. Carson would better serve the country as a Cabinet member of a conservative president--
According to public statements he made last week, it appears as though neurosurgeon extraordinaire-turned-conservative activist Ben Carson is going to throw his hat into the GOP contender ring and run for president in 2016. We hope this very smart, very compassionate, very well-intentioned man does not do that.

“Unless the American people indicate in November that they like Big Government intervention in every part of their lives, I think the likelihood is strong,” he said, on “The Hugh Hewitt Show” recently. He added that it will probably be some months before he decides for certain, perhaps by next May. And again, what happens e*******lly in the upcoming midterms will go a long way towards helping him make his decision.

“I think the chances are reasonably good of that happening,” said Dr. Carson, according to Politico.

“I want to make sure that it’s clearly something my fellow Americans want me to do,” he added. “And I’m also waiting to see what the results are in November, because if the people indicate that they truly do want a nation that is for, or and by the people, then I, along with I hope many other people, would be willing to give it everything we possibly have.”

According to his bio, the medically accomplished Dr. Carson is credited as being the first neurosurgeon to successfully separate twins who were conjoined at the head. In 2008, he was awarded the P**********l Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush; following a widely publicized speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, his criticism of Obamacare and conservative social and political views gave him credo with tens of millions of conservative v**ers.

Born in Detroit to parents who were from rural Georgia, Dr. Carson managed to get accepted to, and complete a bachelor’s degree at, Yale University. He attended medical school at the University of Michigan and practiced primarily at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Medical Center.

"Ben Carson Quotes:"
"We the American People, are not each other's enemies.
The enemies are those people behind the curtain jerking
everybody's chains and trying to divide us up by age, by race by Income.

"Obamacare is the worst thing to happen to this Country since s***ery!"

Ben Carson Receives the P**********l Medal of Freedom in 2008.

"We must understand that we cannot rely on those in the media and in politics to tell us the t***h.

We need to go beyond them and rely on ourselves to craft a truly free America that works for us."

Except For Not Being a Savvy Politician (Is the a bad thing?), He Seems To Be Exactly What You See And Read About Him, no hidden agenda... I Tend to Agree He Could Better Serve The Nation In a Cabinet Post, or Maybe As V.P.... That Might Be The Spot For Him, Yes I Think So... He Would Enhance Any Ticket: Don D.

According to his Wikipedia entry:

Carson was a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics, and he was the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At age 33, he became the youngest major division director in Johns Hopkins history, as director of pediatric neurosurgery. He was also a co-director of the Johns Hopkins Craniofacial Center.

Over the years, in books, articles and interviews, Dr. Carson has made the following political observations and conclusions:

— He has said he was not a member of any political party other than the “Logic Party;”

— He has supported banning semi-automatic weapons (in the past) in large cities, but he’s also said, “There’s a reason for the Second Amendment; people do have the right to have weapons;”

— He does not believe there should be for-profit insurance companies, which won’t please the capitalist/corporatist wing of the GOP establishment. Dr. Carson has said, “The entire concept of for profits for the insurance companies makes absolutely no sense. ‘I deny that you need care and I will make more money.’ This is totally ridiculous. The first thing we need to do is get rid of for-profit insurance companies. We have a lack of policies and we need to make the government responsible for catastrophic health care.” However, Dr. Carson is not a fan of Obamacare;

— Furthering his earlier stance on healthcare, he turned to catastrophic care, which also isn’t likely to thrill most conservatives: “The most natural question is, who will pay for catastrophic health care? The answer:The government-run catastrophic health care fund. Such a fund would be supported by a mandatory contribution of 10 to 15 percent of the profits of each health insurance company, including managed care operations.”

— In 1999, Dr. Carson expressed his support for Affirmative Action but said it should be called “compassionate action” instead;

— On end-of-life care, Dr. Carson wrote in 1992: “As our general population continues to age and as our technical abilities continue to improve we will find ourselves in a position of being able to keep most people alive…well beyond their 100th birthday. The question is “Should we do it simply because we can? It is well known that up to half of the medical expenses incurred in the average American’s life are incurred during the last six months of life….rather than putting them in an intensive care unit, poking and prodding them, operating and testing them ad nauseam, why not allow them the dignity of dying in comfort, at home, with an attendant if necessary?…Decisions on who should be treated and who should not be treated would clearly require some national guidelines.”

In terms of political experience, Dr. Carson has virtually none – and as conservatives will remember, that was one of the biggest raps against Barack Obama during his first campaign. Even the Washington Post recently recalled that.

Does that matter? Well, it mattered to conservatives when the inexperienced one was Obama; it should matter now that the inexperienced one is one of ours.

For his part, Dr. Carson doesn’t see political inexperience as a liability. In a Fox News interview with Chris Wallace after he announced it was “more than likely” he’ll run, Dr. Carson said:

What is required for leadership is wisdom and the ability to assemble a appropriate team, an ability to listen and an ability to make wise decisions. And we also have to recognize what I said a little bit earlier: Our system was designed by our founders, with the people in mind and with the will of the people in mind, not with the will of government. If you want the will of the government, yes, you need people who spend their whole lives in politics, and they are people who are much more likely to be able to impose the will of the government. But I don’t think that’s what we need and Jefferson said that when things got so bad, the people would actually make a correction. I think it’s time to make that correction.“

“Leadership” and “wisdom” are, of course, desired in presidents, but so is experience. Obama’s team has a lot of government experience, but it’s doing a lousy job at execution of domestic and foreign policy. The biggest part of that is because Obama is, first and foremost, an ideologue, and ideology fuels his decision-making.

But a President Carson would be similarly influenced. He would still be faced with a resurgent Russia, a problematic Middle East, an arrogant China, and nervous allies; what if President Carson’s team is made up primarily of old Bus**tes and other neoconservatives? Will they take advantage of a not-so-politically-savvy President Carson and convince him that “nation-building” is a foreign policy, that there really is a U.S. solution to the Middle East, and that drone strikes on foreign soil is a way to build cooperation?

Domestically, we could see a President Carson doing much better; he’s a bright guy with a lot of life experience. But it’s that foreign policy acumen that a president needs in order to be successful, because as Obama’s learning, you might want to ignore the world, but the world won’t let you. The U.S. has many global interests; handling them requires experience.

How about this: Offer Dr. Carson the Cabinet position of secretary of Health and Human Services. Give him the IRS to run (and reform). See if he wants to be Commerce Secretary. Or just make him a trusted advisor for domestic policy.

We are aware that the current mood among tens of millions of v**ers is heavily slanted towards political outsiders, but the problem is, it is simply unrealistic to think that every elected official and government employee can be eliminated tomorrow without any consequences for the nation. And while we like the “idea” of a Ben Carson presidency, we find him playing a better, more useful role as a compliment to a Cruz, or Paul, or even a Rubio presidency.
