That story reminds me of in 1964 myself, my wife, and two babies were on our way to San Francisco where I was stationed, coming back from Christmas leave in a 1953 Chevy. We were coming into a small town in Oregon when our car just quit. It was downhill and I coasted into a gas station / garage. The owner quickly diagnosed the problem it was the timing gear. I told him I was in the military and I didn't have much money and he said "we'll take care of it". He ordered the part and it was going to take a day or two to get it. He let me and my family stay with him and his wife. Meanwhile I helped him out at the garage and gas station. When he got the part, I helped him install it and he got my 53 Chevy running like a Swiss watch. When I asked him how much I owed him, he just charged me for the timing gear, no labor. I thanked him so much and made it a point to stop by his town on every trip to get gas and to thank him again.

That's the America I know. When we first moved to TN, Strangers would drive by and wave at us. Finally one day in a parking lot, my husband asked one of the wavers if he had us confused with someone else. Man quickly responded, " no sir, I just saw your out of state plate and wanted to welcome you to the community".

No surprise here. Just the way we were raised.

Good for you. I was taken out of Washington Co. TN at 12 years old. Not my idea.

The real America, and in some places it still exists to this day.
I know, having traveled this country many times coast to coast.
However, I have also seen the ugly side as well.

I was taken out of Washington County, Arkansas when I was 11, early 1950s. I still miss it. Had a family reunion there in 2005, 150+ people showed up from as far away as Washington and New Hampshire. Having a big family is a really great thing.
