Give Obama and his administration every benefit of the doubt by assuming these IRS folks went after converative organizations on their own, which is quite possible, still leaves one with one clear conclusion.
The complex tax code provide IRS agents with enormous power over anyone they want to wield it against. Because the interpretations of the complex code is so wide open on so many issues, and because the IRS has virtually unlimited legal and policing resources, once they focus on you the imbalance of power is crushing. With them having so much power over so many, surely they'd be concerned when someone, like the Tea Party folks, suggest a lower and simpler tax system. Should something like a very simple flat tax ever come into being, both the power and the job security of the IRS folks would diminish significantly.
In other words, the very existance of such an incentive to abuse power is among the best arguments to remove that power with a much simplified system. Not only would it reduce the power of these bureaucrats, but also legislatures whose power to give benefit to special interests is the source of so much of their ability to solicit donations successfully.
Professional politicians and career bureaucras will not easily surrender such power - only a angry and involved e*****rate can make that happen.
