Guess Why University of California System Will No Longer Consider SAT, ACT Scores for Admissions

The nine campuses of the University of California (UC) system will no longer consider standardized testing scores as part of the admission process beginning this fall.

The change is the result of a legal settlement of a lawsuit brought by groups that claimed that the traditional SAT and ACT tests are r****t.

Under the settlement, the university, which enrolls some 225,000 undergraduate students, said it won’t consider SAT or ACT scores sent along with admissions applications until 2025. The university further stated that it had no current plan to consider the scores after 2025.

The settlement specifies that the university can still use SAT and ACT scores to determine course placement after the students are accepted. But the nine campuses will no longer use the test scores to determine how to award scholarships.

The original complaints claimed that SAT and ACT tests serve as a metric of wealth and race, rather than a predictor of college success.

SAT and ACT scores have been a mainstay of the college admissions process for decades. Opponents of the tests’ use for admission argue that students of certain races score lower on average than other races. Proponents say standardized tests offer an equal playing field, since all students take the same test.

Why don't we just ask all high school graduates to deposit 40 thousand dollars in a fund and award them a diploma for their desired field of study. Would get them into the workforce sooner and if they had a job might not be so prone to torching the stores where they work. We could offer a week of spring break activities for the first four years of work so they would not miss out on a very necessary part of college.

Um...because my ancient, old, moldy, decrepit ass could pass it embarrassingly better with my HS and Jr College education than 98% of their best grads.

What will they use instead? Race? Home address? Athletic prowess? Wokeness?

I still say I could kick most youngsters' asses on any academic or IQ test they want.

I've forgotten more than most of them will ever know and I still know more than any group of them combined.

A few years ago (4 or 5) I had a conversation with a couple of staff members at a California university. One of them, commenting student body stats, recited the student body make up by race. I think the number of races mentioned was 5 or 6. He specifically stated that the Asian percentage was to low but they were working on correcting that.
To me that meant that race is their #1 consideration for student admissions.

I have known people who had great grades but lousy SAT scores. Some are not good test takers. Just a thought.

How is it that these alleged people test well enough to get great class grades but then do not do well on ACT/SAT? Maybe the class test bar is too low?

Do you know any people that get poor classroom grades yet excel on the entrance tests? Do you know a relatively dumb person that hasn’t applied themselves to classroom learning but are “top notch” test takers?

There are ways to improve test taking sk**ls. Practice being one of them. Test taking classes are another. Counseling is a third. Anxiety over test taking manifests itself early on and should be addressed before entrance exam time.

In work life our abilities are tested constantly during the breadth of our careers. If you don’t do well, you may find yourself spending lots of time finding new jobs.

Junior college and trades offer good options to test ones resolve to be good at what they do.

The concept of “they are really good students but are bad test takers” is largely a “feel good” myth that should realistically be attributed to laziness.

I hear you , however I need to push back. I am not an educator. Remember in 4th grade taking wh**ever the achievement tests were telling Nun in new school I am not smart. When results were in she said she wanted to see me. Figured I was toast. Surprise , I tested at 12th grade and college level. She explained that my family issues were the cause of my poor grades. I have always excelled at standardized tests. So I have empathy for people who do not test well.....maybe people need to understand the havoc in homes can play forward for kids , especially when no one cares if you live or die. Hard to concentrate when you have not been fed and listened to drunks screaming all night. Just another perspective.

Yeah, maybe true in a small percentage of isolated cases. Generally, a troubled home environment leads to poor grades and poor standardized test scores.
