Cicada Brood X is going to "come calling".

Get your earplugs early, before hoarding kicks in!

Trillions of cicadas will soon emerge after 17 years underground throughout the United States.

The insects will likely appear in 15 states, from Indiana to Georgia to New York.
An application called Cicada Safari will allow people to map sightings of the bug.

They mainly damage young trees, which can be netted to keep the pests away, said Gene Kritsky,
an entomologist at Mount St. Joseph University.

It’s great sport to shoot by them out of trees with my Red Rider BB gun. πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘

The cicada is supposedly a tasty treat in oriental cultures.Perhaps some people who know how to cook them could help the homeless learn how to cook the bugs. Since the protein level is supposedly high perhaps they would make a useful soup for the homeless, and that would k**l two birds with one stone, as the saying goes. Help rid the area of annoying flying bugs and provide a high protein food source for those who do not have money to buy food.

Sharpens up your aim too. When I was a kid, I shot them with .22 shorts but I could rarely find them when I hit them. My dad convinced me to use my BB gun - you could buy 50 BBs for a penny, 50 .22 shorts were around 50 to 75 cents in TX panhandle, if my memory is right. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I could afford to miss more often shooting BBs. πŸ˜‰

I have been blessed by never having to be so hungry that a bug looked good. Our dogs love to eat cicadas and other bugs, but, unfortunately they get upset stomachs and vomit on the floor, so that is not a good solution either, The neighbors cats eat the bugs and don't get upset stomachs but making a delicacy out of them might work out well.

Trouble is that you have to lay in a 17 year supply, dried & ground storage would be a snap tho.

I would expect that if you did some research you would find that there are a number of species that would be suitable for eating by humans. I have never looked into it but have read that the Chinese people (for instance)do eat a number of bugs, as well as other things that I would never eat unless I were desperate. There is something strange about having half the world overfed and fat and the others often close to starvation.

At the risk of getting the topic bounced back to "main":

U.N. promotes insects as low-fat, high-protein snack to feed the hungry

Edible insects are being promoted as a low-fat, high-protein food for people, pets and livestock. According to the U.N., they come with appetizing side benefits: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and livestock pollution, creating jobs in developing countries and feeding the millions of hungry people in the world.
