Help please-~

So my son finds a nest with one egg and a few days later a second egg, right on his Truck.. See pictures.. He uses his car most of the time but has his truck too.. He doesn’t want to disturb it but in two weeks needs to help his friend move..

Dilemma~What should we do?? I think its a nest from a Mourning Dove?? Not sure tho? Concerned the sun beating down on the windshield will get too hot too?

Can we safely move it to say a tree close to the driveway? Or will the parents reject it?? I told my son if we use gloves and maybe put it in a handing basket in the tree all will be well.. Or he leaves it until they hatch and rent a truck to help his friend.. But we don’t know what will happen if we move it??

Any idea’s??

Let's start a go fund account to pay for a rental truck to use while the eggs remain where they are until they hatch.

If someone sets up the account, I'll donate a hundred bucks.

In the heat from the sun on the truck they should be hard boiled in about 20 minutes.

You are a sweetheart, Wolf.. Nice of you to offer but a truck rental isn’t that much.. I already called U~Haul and he can rent one for 19.95 plus mileage if we go that route..So far this seems the best option..✨💞✨

We are in Colorado with temps in the 70’s this week but next week cooler temps again in the 40’s with perhaps some snow again..That also concerns me tho.. I suspect momma bird will take care of them knowing (feeling) the change in temperature?? Or we could put a blanket over them but then mom looses her chance to care for them that night?? Damn birds!! Love them though..🤗

Does anyone know the gestation cycle if a dove?? I looked it up and it suggests 14/15 days.... If so they are in the 5th day today...

I think that even if you leave the nest alone and the little birds hatch, you then have until they are ready to fly away to worry about! They are completely out in the open on that truck with no protection from the elements or from cats, hawks or anything else that would eat them! IMHO!

Im afraid that the momma bird will abandon the nest if you move it, but what other choice is there? It may be one of those situations that you’re d#$&med if you do and d&*$med if you don’t!

Good luck wh**ever you two decide to do! I’d certainly give it my best and try to save them!👍😌

Try, putting a chair or big box where the truck is. put a blue blanket or tarp on the chair or box. Then (wearing clean gloves to leave no scent) slide a piece of cardboard under the straw nest and pick it up and put it on the blue
"f**e truck". I think that could work. As with all real estate , it's location, location, location

Gosh dangit...Hadn’t thought about the predators... I know I have seen hawks and plenty of stray cats around my home.. My son only lives about 20/30 minutes from me so he’s got them too, I’m sure.. Also hadn’t thought about the time needed to learn to fly.. Holy crumb..

Seems strange they would pick his truck to build a nest and lay eggs..He said just one day it was there, saw when he parked his car...

Now a new set of things to worry about..My son will (not) thank you, when I call him.. lolol

Trying to keep them alive is the main focus for sure..

However
Birds and their nests are protected under federal law that makes it illegal to move a nest that is occupied. However, when the nest is under construction, you can remove it.

In this situation , the law is the last thing I would think about

I’m going to keep this suggestion in thought but concerned over the prey that may try to get them...

Was just reading about abandonment if he moves them..Guess that is out ~~
This article says:
Don’t move eggs from an “abandoned” nest to another nest. Depending on the species, some birds may not accept a foreign egg. Also, birds stop laying at a certain number for a reason. By adding more mouths to feed to the nest you may over tax the mother birds ability to take care of too many young, jeopardizing the health of all of them.
Don’t move the nest. If the parents return, they may not recognize or accept the new nest location.
You shouldn’t attempt to pickup or touch the eggs, they are so easy to damage.

I wonder why they set up nesting on the hood of the truck?? And if really a mourning dove.. My son says that's what mom looks like..??

This is the first egg my son saw, note the size of the nest graduate when the second egg was laid?? We may become felons soon enough, if its now finished???.... Shhhhh, don’t tell anyone tho...😉

Thank You really appreciate you and Everyone’s help here...💞
