Why are Republicans so threatened by universal daycare?

The "threat" is not "daycare," it is just another aspect of "government mandate and enforcement." An American citizen is by definition one who believes that they have the right to choose given to them by the American Constitution declared in its original concept of "freedom."

I would amend your comment "given to them by the American Constitution" by saying "protected by the American Consititution".

A person's rights are "t***hs to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
