I used to like doing this to the s**mmers who called saying I won a trip or some other prize. I would talk to them and waste their time. They would say something like "take a check from your checking account and write it for some amount in the hundreds of dollars. Then write void over the check." They would then ask for my checking account routing number and I would give them a phony account number. A minute later they would want to confirm the number again (because they couldn't find an account with my name on it). It was great fun keeping them on the line as long as possible. Finally, when they realized I was messing with them and that the jig was up because I was on to their s**m, They would at first get mad and say "don't you want the prize you've won?" I would immediately tell them that I was detective #&%@$ from the L.A.P.D. and we had received several complaints about their s**m and they had just luckily dialed the wrong number. I would then inform them that I had used another line to contact other department investigators who were at the moment tracking their number and location so that the local authorities in their jurisdiction were immediately notified, and were on their way to bust them.
