A former chair of the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday slammed what the event has now become, suggesting former President Ronald Reagan would not get elected by those in attendance at this year’s gathering.

Mickey Edwards — who led the American Conservative Union, which organizes the event, for five years until 1983 — ripped Republicans attending this year’s CPAC in Orlando for their devotion to former President Donald Trump.

In an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett, Edwards likened the GOP to a cult whose members are living in an alternate reality.

Edwards served as a GOP representative for Oklahoma for 16 years until 1993 but quit the GOP in January following the deadly U.S. Capitol r**t. The violence was perpetrated by a violent mob of Trump supporters who’d been whipped up by the then-president’s lie that the 2020 e******n was s****n from him.

“The Republican party really no longer stands for any kind of principles, conservative or otherwise,” Edwards told Burnett on Friday.

“The party seems now to be completely following the lead of one man wherever he goes, which is the definition of a cult,” he continued. “Now all that matters is, ‘Trump is for this, we’re for this.’ And that includes denying t***h, denying fact, denying reality. It’s such a disconnect from what’s really happened in the world.”

Edwards said Republicans speaking at this year’s CPAC “are living in an alternate reality in which facts don’t matter, the Constitution doesn’t matter.”

He also minced no words when commenting on current ACU chair Matt Schlapp, who has bought into Trump’s mass v***r f***d lie.

“He doesn’t have the job that I used to have because when I was head of CPAC, it was a group that was based on conservative principles,” said Edwards. “We were strong supporters of the Constitution. We believed in free e******ns. We believed in democracy. These people don’t believe in any of those things.”

“You know, they’re no different than the people who flock to other totalitarian leaders in other countries,” he added. “They’re no different than they are in Hungary, they’re no different than they used to be Germany. Wh**ever their great leader says, they do, and there’s no underpinning of fact, there’s no underpinning or concern about the norms of free democracy.”

Edwards concluded that the CPAC of the Trump era is “not at all the same organization I led.”

“Ronald Reagan could not get elected to anything by the people who were at that CPAC conference this year.”

I wouldn’t dismiss Rumitold out right, because the article does reflect the old Guard of the Republican Party which was basically Democrat Lite. Trump did move the party to a more Populist brand of politics based on smaller government, emphasis on individual liberty and responsibility, putting America first as well as belief in the Constitution. Could Reagan get the nomination of this group? In a heart beat! Could JFK get the nomination of the Democrat/Socialist Party? No way. Just my thoughts.

I found this article from a decade ago. It seems this guy was not happy with CPAC long before Donald J. Trump came along. Which kind of makes your article irrelevant.

The only people CNN will have on their show are people will agree with them. Why want they debate Shapiro, D'Souza, Owen's? I can tell you why, these people can back up their words with evidence!

That just about sums it up, to a tee.

Everything is wrong with everything and everyone else except Us.
That is an alternate reality.

Please tell me how smaller government benefits you personally. I hear this all the time but can’t figure out why anyone would be defending the talking points of rich and powerful people and corporations.
They want smaller government with kess regulations to increase their profit instead of wasting it on you and your safety issues, Health Issues, wage issues, overall less oversight of protection for you.
You gain nothing but Lose constantly.
What do you get for v****g against having your meat and cheese inspected ?
OSHA programs?
Trump reduced regulations on the pork industry. Causing unsafe work conditions and possibly unhealthy pork.
Where does the money go they save by not having these inspectors ?
Do you get it in your check ?
Where does the money go ?
We have been cutting government for a while now, what in your opinion has gotten better ?
We have acquired more billionaires, heading toward Trillionaires.
Has your life taken any major upswings?

I have not paid more taxes for i*****l a***ns to come here and demand their freebies by the hundreds of millions. There are caravans of millions of them headed for our newly open borders as we speak.

I have not paid more taxes for paying for people on Welfare, Food Stamps, Medicaid and free housing for those i*****l a***ns. Now I will be...when they get here.

I have not paid more taxes for large amounts of people who don't want to work (NOT cannot work) for a living - Most of those people found jobs under Trump but are now being forced back into welfare/food stamp/medicaid lines and therefore more dependent on the government...

I have not paid higher taxes for bonuses and pay increases for our do-nothing congressmen and women who go to work for only half the year (174 days/yr. in the House, 191 days/yr. in the Senate). They just v**ed an increase in both for themselves....which I will be paying for.

I have not paid higher taxes for gas, food, clothing, property or entertainment. Gas has already increased from $2.29 to $2.89 in the 60 days since Biden's inauguration. A dozen eggs went from $1.20 to $2.00....

In case you "forget" it is the government that raises taxes on things....the larger the government, the more taxes they can think of.

50% over $25,000.00
The tax would be on $12,500.00 of 25K
$25K is $65,658.13 in today's money.
$32,000.00 is $84,042.41 in today's money.
Seems like anyone receiving $65K to $84K, in 1983 would not be hurting paying tax on 1/2 that amount.
