There is actually a section for religious talk... It's called "Faith, Religion, and Spirituality"...

Right! I wish I'd known that. I didn't discover it until after posting.

What's interesting about religious folks is the assertion that many of them make that one must be religious or have a religion in order to be moral or ethical.

When some of the most highly profiled leaders have made abysmal t***sgressions, the advocates seem to fall back on the "everyone's a sinner" gambit, and "god forgives sinners"...

Such hogwash...

I've encountered groups which respect ethics and don't depend on religion to determine ethics: humanists (most of whom were atheists in the group I happened to find), Unitarian Universalists, The Ethical Society, and even (in my opinion) some Quakers. In my experience ethics, kindness, and intelligence usually go together.

However, THAT is a moderated section and, as such, members can be blocked from posting there, and posts can be edited or deleted. And, that section is moderated by die-hard religiousists...

...so, GCC is the perfect location for this discussion, which doesn't have to be about mainstream religion per se - - it can also be about "IF god" & "IF religion", if the poster so chooses, WITHOUT some arbitrary religioso authority deciding on the worth of someone's thinking.

Wow! Thanks for that information.

I was in the Main (mostly political) section and someone started asking me questions about God or religion. So I decided to start a thread over here in "General Chit-Chat (non-political talk)" in case anybody wants to talk about God or religion.

I looked at the most recent topics here, and found three about "Rapture", but nothing else really recent about God or religion.

So, if anybody wants to say or ask anything about God or religion, go ahead.

There are scripture that refer to the rapture in the Bible! Not called rapture but refers to it if u want to research: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 1 Corinthians 15:51-52, Matthew 24:36-42, and Luke: 17:20-37! God bless!

Not part of historic Christianity - - The Rapture is simply another construct "for" men conjured "by" men.

Wrong.

I have never met an atheist. I've met some who claimed they were but in reality were not. I doubt there really is such a thing. To believe in nothing and that there is no point to life takes a lot more faith.

I doubt they were atheists. What is the point and where do they derive their meaning. If there were no God there would be no morality or meaning to life.

Every one I met was really agnostic.

Re: "no point to life":

Being an atheist would not mean one thinks there's no point to life.

If I love a person, that's the point to life, or one of them.

But if there were no people to love and no animals nor plants to love, then it would be difficult to find a point to life, but still not impossible. At that point I'd probably try to strike up a conversation with God. But even without God, people, animals, nor plants, and without any belief that there were a God, even then there might still be a point to life. Why not just live as well as you can, and enjoy your own progress? And love yourself. That might be a meaningful life.

Its an empty existence without a belief. People say they search for t***h but they are really looking for ways to buttress their unbelief. If one believes there is no God then where does their sense of morality come from?

Not all people seek a reason or a meaning... Some folk simply enjoy the time they are here...

The God = Morality argument is a logic fallacy.. It cannot be proven or demonstrated....

Saying an atheist is really an agnostic is like saying a Christian is really a Muslim...
