Reports: Biden to cancel Keystone XL pipeline permit on first day in office
U.S. president-elect Joe Biden plans to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline permit immediately after taking office, several news outlets reported on Monday.

Canadian state-funded CBC News, which first reported the story, said a briefing note, shared by the Biden t***sition team with some stakeholders, listed executive actions planned for day one of his presidency.1

Among those was one which read, "Rescind Keystone XL pipeline permit," according to the story, which was confirmed by the New York Times and others, but without any named sources.2

The list is reportedly a longer version of one made public over the weekend by Biden's Chief of Staff Ronald Klain.3 The Klain memo did not mention the pipeline but did say the list was incomplete.

Biden and his team had also spoken of his intention to cancel the pipeline while he was campaigning ahead of the November e******ns.4

The permit was initially rejected by then-President Barack Obama in 2015 but was approved by President Donald Trump soon after he took office in 2017.

The current Canadian government supports the pipeline project.

Pipeline brings jobs, reduces dependence on OPEC
If completed, the $8 billion Keystone XL pipeline would carry 830,000 barrels of crude oil a day from oil sands in Alberta to Nebraska. There, it would connect with U.S. refineries on the Gulf Coast through the original Keystone pipeline.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said repealing the pipeline's permit "would k**l jobs on both sides of the border, weaken the critically important Canada-U.S. relationship and undermine U.S. national security by making the United States more dependent on OPEC oil imports in the future."5
