Of no consequence: In 1986, I made a trip to NYC for my sister's wedding after living for 2 years in NM

It may be hard to comprehend for people who haven't lived in the City there a while why that real and good food preoccupies the mind upon return. Going into so-called delis in NM where all you can get for Roast Beef is reconstituted meat caramelized to appear real. And that goes for all the other major food groups like fatty corned beef, pastrami, and ham on the bone. (There is more but that is all that I care about.) Oh, and then there is fresh fish. Real Italian and Chinese food. Gyros from the gods. I guess I should mention Dirt Water franks with that special red onion sauce and knishes.

I think, in living there for 37 years, that food is the lingua franca of almost every conversation. How to cook a great burger, restaurants you have to try, spices to make your marinara sauce perfect, best way to cook snapper or shrimp, and so forth. I would say that most conversations primarily center around eating. If someone mentions a good movie or play they have seen, a restaurant one must eat at is part of the dialogue. Unless you have had the enormous pleasure of the food-scene in the City, it is hard to understand.

Then I remembered my younger sister was getting married, lol.

We spent one morning together and then went for lunch at the Second Avenue Jewish Deli, my first time since leaving NYC and standing before the magnificence of what real food looks like. I knew what I wanted, a pastrami on Jewish rye with a kosher dill pickle but the experience overwhelmed me. Awestruck! And then the encounter how New Yorkers sometimes to talk to each other few who live elsewhere would understand and most City-dwellers just take in stride or laugh. The guy behind the counter said to me, "What are you a decoration? You gonna order or what?" Have to love it.

You were in NM, the state with the greatest Mexican food on the planet and you're complaining because they didn't serve NY cuisine? Shame on you, that's all I've got to say...

I agree. However, it was what I used to and well-known as being extraordinary.

Unreal. It is my home food. I love Mexican food but it is not my food, no complaints. My home in NYC had vast chooses of genuine cuisine and nothing you can get in NM. However, the thread was most about how New Yorkers talk to each.

Strange........I won't bring up politics here out of respect for your thread.
But, I do see a contradiction here.

I think I’ll stick with Southern hospitality and the ability to breathe and see the stars at night!

New Mexico is our favorite type of Mexican food.......absolutely outstanding! We were also introduced to Indian fry bread in New Mexico! We cook Mexican a couple of times every week!
