That is so cool! Peregrine?

Juvenile hawk of some sort. Not sure exactly. There is a nest of 2 juveniles and one adult across the stream from my Critter Patch.

I e-mailed my sister-in-law and asked her about where her daughter lived in China. I'll just give you a copy of what she replied. You will no doubt be able to make more of it than I. Here it is:

Surely. She lived in Xining for the first three years. It was in between Shanghai and Beijing. Near the Tibetan border. She then moved to another city closer to the border to be curriculum director to westernize the program. It failed, since they wanted truly to remain with Chinese way of schooling. She had a lot of vision, but did not have the resources to support it. I’ll have to find out the exact name of the second city. She WAS able to travel when she could, so took in lots of country. She went to Shanghai, Thailand, Beijing, and other places to dig into the culture.
Thanks,
Deb

Hope this helps.

A little

Like saying she was between Chicago and Huston, near the border of Oregon

Sounds like she made a real go of it

Yeah, it does not look like a Peregrine and you may be right about a young hawk, but I'm pretty sure that is a falcon and not a hawk. Could very well be wrong though. Hawks are absolutely awesome but the fourth most noble raptor in North America (in my opinion). Owls, eagles, falcons hawks in that order - all are incredible birds. I would never disagree w/ anyone who wanted to put a bald eagle at the top, but I would also advise them to read up on the Great Horned Owl. Awesome visitor to your deck no matter what he/she is!

Here's a closer shot. You seem to know more than I! I'm just going off what a neighbor claimed.

And we'll, now you can see part of the Critter Patch!

Thanks for posting this. I think your neighbor is right. It is definitely a young bird but that second photo definitely looks like a hawk and not a falcon due to the width of the tail. The spots on the chest in the first pic are what confused me. I think it is most likely an immature red-tailed hawk, possibly a fan-tail or maybe even a red-shouldered hawk. Tough to identify immature birds, especially when you're not an expert (I am not). I used to work w/ a friend who was a master falconer who could identify a bird from far off just by the way it flapped it's wings. Some of it rubbed off on me but not enough I guess. Frustrating to me that I can't definitively identify this bird but hey... bottom line is when you live in a place where a raptor lands on your deck, you live in a very cool place. Thanks again. Very cool.
