Because the ball of foil and the solid ball are two separate objects. The solid ball was never formed in a microwave oven. I live in a low-income residential hotel. Although we can't cook in our rooms (hot plates, etc.), we're allowed to have microwave ovens and I've lost count of the ones I've seen that we're utterly fried because some buttwipes didn't remove the foil before nuking his/her meal. I'm not sure, but I think foil deflects heat around the inside of the oven and that causes it to catch on fire. I'm just glad that once I'm with my family in Nebraska and out of this over-priced closet, I won't see any more stupidity!
