A friend and colleague of mine who is currently subcontracting in a Sea Guardian maritime security project off Somalia has been in-country several times. He tells me the Somalian mindset is in complete counterpoint to ours, profound tribalism and total acceptance of larceny and corruption as norms.
Another colleague, whom I trained several years ago and keeps in touch, is working on a security project with an engineering firm over there. He tells me exactly the same thing and more.
Omar's ebullient adolescent smile masks a lot more inbred malevolence, deviousness and corruption than the average "hometown" type American can even fathom.

Children grow up much faster in places like Somalia than they do in developed western countries. I've never had the displeasure of visiting that s**thole, but I have worked in similar countries.
When starvation, disease and sudden lethal violence is a daily reality in ones life, which I doubt you even fathom, it makes for an entirely different upbringing and subsequent mindset.

I have the good sense not to judge every country through the lens of American prejudice. I think Permafrost is much closer to the situation that you are trying to disparage, and would certainly have a better perspective.

I tend to listen to what people on the ground whom I know to be realists ( you have to be in our profession or people can get seriously hurt, put out of business, or worse) tell me.
