The Worlds Holiest Place.

According to Jewish tradition, the world is like a dartboard, increasing in holiness as you move towards the center. In the outermost circle, is Exile. Moving inwards, the most sacred country is the Land of Israel, within which is the holy city of Jerusalem. Within Jerusalem is the Temple Mount. Within the Temple is the Holy of Holies – humanity’s supreme sacred center. All that is left there is a piece of bedrock with a mysterious name…

A Rock with a Mysterious Name
The sacred rock at the heart of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount is known in Hebrew as אבן השתיה Even Ha-Shetiyah. The word even אבן means “stone” but shetiyah שתיהis more enigmatic. Some say shetiyah comes from shatat meaning “foundation”, because this rock formed the base of the Temple structure, as well as that of the whole world. Others say it comes from the word sheti meaning “weave” because from this rock, the fabric of the whole world was woven.

The Drinking Stone
A fascinating third theory is that shetiyah comes from the Hebrew word shatah meaning “drink”, because this is the place from which all humanity derives the waters of life. This theory is supported by the tradition that this rock was also the site of the Garden of Eden. This explains why according to the Bible, “a river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters” (Genesis 2:10).

The Rivers Shall Return There are no rivers emerging from this rock today, because we are in an intermediary stage between Eden and Redemption. The prophet Joel reassures us that at the End of Days “a fountain will flow out of the LORD's house and will water the valley of acacias” (Joel 3:18). If you yearn to see the waters of Scripture come alive,
