While we are talking about racial justice...let’s talk about the FDR monument, and repurposing it
At the time of the Pearl Harbor attacks, about 127,000 Japanese Americans were living in the US. FDR forcibly removed 120,000 Japanese Americans from their homes, farms, and businesses, for no reason other than their ethnicity. 112,000 of them were living on the west coast at the time. They were placed into internment camps.
Many became ill and died in the camps. This US President denied an entire ethnic group their supposedly inalienable rights, in an unprecedented act of administrative malfeasance.
Amid much controversy, the FDR men was established during the administration of William Jefferson Clinton.
I propose we consider renaming and repurposing the memorial to one describing the US citizen experience during World War II. The statue of FDR should rightfully be removed, with a monument to replace it, giving a more honest depiction of the role civilians played in the war, as well as how some citizens unfairly lost their liberty due to a capricious president.
