If your behavior is moderated by a written summary of ten "rules," you have abdicated any personal morality and ethics in favor of those of the author and accepted the author as your authority. Or perhaps you have simply found ten "rules" that coincide with your already well developed personal morality and ethics, and endorsed them on their merit as a good start for others to consider.

A better question.... Do your kids know how to get along with others peacefully while getting their own important needs met? Do they k**l? Steal? Lie? Covet others property inappropriately? Have a spouse to c***t on? Honor the family?

The other four have to do with how to behave around a supernatural deity. Good to keep in mind, I suppose, in case one ever appears and seems to require attention or assistance.

Most normally intelligent people can identify major societal rules of conduct, whether they encounter the ideas from anthologies of myths and history copied from ancient texts and taught by acolytes of the faith, or enumerated on Sesame Street.

Stop avoiding the statement. If kids arrive at school knowing nothing about religion it's the parents' fault. If you want to leave all religious teaching to outside teachers, send your poor kids to "religious" schools.

Common sense should tell you that you should do your religious teaching at home or church. Should a catholic school have to teach king James or the Book of Mormon?
