President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s farewell address is famous for his prophetic warning about the military-industrial complex: “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”

Eisenhower’s warning is often repeated but has gone mostly ignored, as has another observation from the same speech. Warning that scientists dependent on government contracts and grants might cripple scientific breakthroughs, Eisenhower said “public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.”

Eisenhower put his warning in context: “Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields.”

“In the same fashion,” Eisenhower continued, “the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity.”

“Scientific research and discovery” should be held in “respect” Eisenhower said. Yet he foresaw, “The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.”

I read the damn article. I still don't see how it does anything at all to trash F***i's medical expertise which Trump seems to resent and reject.

Excellent quotes and ever so true...

F***i is a ruse working for the One World Order... Don’t trust a thing that mealy mouthed little twit says, his agenda is not for the safety of the United States but rather the UN and its agenda!!

Faux-ci has been there way too long.
He's too arrogant about his "knowledge'.
People shouldn't stay in one position for too long because they stay trapped in the knowledge they think they have.
He needed to continually update his knowledge, but he's too comfortable about being in the same job for so long.
I thing he needs fired.

American, Eisenhower warned about connections between the military brass and the defense industry. The CDC is the government agency with the most knowledge of this terrible disease that is causing so much suffering and death. Trump doesn't like what they say, because he is far more worried that a lousy economy would be bad for his ree******n chances, than he is by the deaths of another hundred thousand American deaths.

Why must you always try to turn a decent conversational string into something it is not?? Eisenhower was one of our best & most loved President's, you probably cannot accept that fact as he was a Republican!

Whether you can get it through your thick skull or not...Trump has a DUAL RESPONSIBILITY...both to the health & safety of this country's citizens and ALSO to the economic welfare of this country's citizens! This situation has been an EXTREMELY DIFFICULT BALANCE...but you & your fellow l*****t are ONLY interested in seeing ONE SIDE of the coin!

Your biased accusations are not only wrong...they are VILE!

American, We are fighting a war of attrition against an enemy that wants to infect and/or k**l as many of us as possible. I have trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that nearly a hundred thousand Americans died of this terrible disease in three or four months. That more than the Korean and Viet Nam wars in over two decades of fighting. We won't be completely out of the woods until a workable v*****e is available. Then, you will hear about how the government is trying to take away your freedom for making you get a v*****e.

American, We are fighting a war of attrition again... (show quote)

The issue is the ‘politics’ of this. Yes, it is bad. But were any lives really ‘saved’ by shutting down the country? Look at the damage it has caused. And the ‘experts’ have been consistently wrong.

Your comment (also used by others) is simple grandstanding: EACH YEAR of the Vietnam Nam War had 35,000 to 45,000 people k**led in traffic accidents. Korean War: about 35,000 combat deaths (total) - with about 33,000 people k**led EACH YEAR in traffic accidents.

It is terrible that so many people have died from the W***n flu, as well as those who have died from other epidemics. But it happened; and guess what - it will happen again.

The whole intent of this ‘quarantine’ was NOT to save lives - but simply to make sure hospitals weren’t over-run. It didn’t happen - and the time is long past.
