Don't know if you've ever marched in a military parade but I have. This was back when we wore fatigues and before BDUs. First, you replace your combat boot laces with white paracord laces after they are spit-shined. Then you blouse them were the pants stop at the top of your boots. Then you put on your blue ascot and hat. Heavy starch in the pants and shirt and military creases. Your boots also have metal clips tapped into the heels. You form up and when you are nearing the parade ground you pull out a little clicker everyone has and as your right heel comes down you click the clicker in unison. Very impressive if you're all in sync and with the clicker and heels hitting at the same time it's like music. We won the commander's trophy three years running. I've been a boot clicker many times.
