Should white people sing black spirituals?

Western Michigan University is grappling with that question after a black student was triggered and suffered a social media meltdown when a predominantly white choir sang “Wade in the Water.”

“So apparently Western Michigan University thinks it’s ok for WHITE peoples to sing negro spirituals while the instructor talking bout ‘these songs don’t belong to one race.’ They sure as hell DO,” WMU music major Shaylee Faught wrote on a social media now seen by more than 1 million people.

Faught got triggered after the choir’s black conductor reportedly told the audience that the se******ns were “American songs” performed “for everyone” and “have no ethnicity.”

The performance, “Spirituals: From Ship to Shore,” included songs like “Go Down, Moses” and Wade in the Water.”

Well, faster than you could say Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, nearly the entire campus suffered a meltdown.

“We as a collective are appalling that this took place on our campus,” The Black Student Union wrote in a statement. “This act is a further example and reflection of the racial insensitivity and ignorance that has been allowed to occur on Western Michigan’s campus.”

The BSU called for “racial re-education on sensitivity training and cultural competence.”

I have no idea what that means but it sounds like one of Bernie Sanders’ gulags.

University leaders released a statement to WKZO expressing their grave concerns over the matter.

“This student’s perspective is real and it is important,” they wrote. “It is one among many different perspectives.”

John Wesley Wright, who is a renowned conductor and professor, told the Western Herald that he has no idea why the student got triggered and he has no reason to apologize.

“I just got off the phone with the bass from ‘Sweet Honey in The Rock,’ (an African-American a cappella ensemble) and her first question was, ‘Has anyone looked into the mental health of the people who made those comments,’” he told the newspaper.

The professor’s comment set off the Western Student Association who condemned the “insidious nature of cultural appropriation.”

“When the director is more concerned with investigating the mental health of a student rather than empathetically responding to concerns of students, it further illustrates that student’s voices do not matter,” they wrote in a statement to the newspaper. “We do not and will not tolerate these inappropriate responses.”

The snowflakes who run the Black Student Union demanded an apology from the School of Music.

“To decrease the likelihood of events like this happening in the future, we demand that wh**ever culture, race, or ethnicity is being represented must be consulted before the show,” the BSU wrote.

In other words, the choir may want to take a pass on that Spring concert medley featuring the works of Dr. Dre and Lil Nasty.

This is terrible.
Just 30 some years ago I can easily remember that while incarcerated in state penitentiary I sang for Jesus with inmates of every color and background. Later on while doing some piggyback time in the fed, I was the only white man in an all black choir singing acapella negro spiritual.
Today 20 years removed from prison, I go into the county jail, preaching the Gospel and song leading acapella negro spirituals.
The black men love it.
I never stole anything, I shared the joy.

How about the appropriation of white culture? From now on, all the black students MUST st op wearing American-style blue jeans and walk around naked or nearly naked. The women may no longer use our cosmetics and shampoos, but use cow dung in their hair and go topless. Oh! And they may no longer use a telephone or cell phone. They'll have to use runners to carry messages long distances. As for food? Well it's back to raw insects and snake meat. How ridiculous! With the improved communications of our age, everyone 'appropriates' from the other cultures. What a shame if we couldn't go out for Italian or Chinese food and what a loss if we couldn't listen to and sing one another's songs and music. Amazing Grace words were written by a WHITE ex-s***er who set the words to a tune sung by the black s***es, a song of repentance and redemption. Should it be forbidden to be sung by w****s . . or b****s? Pray it may never be so! ! !

Amazing Grace.....on of my favorites. I knew it was written by a white s***er during a raging storm at sea. I did know that the tune was common but I didn't know it was a black song. Please, can you tell me where to find the lyrics?

Steve Miller Band recorded Turn You 'Round on his Saving Grace album over 50 years ago. Harvey Mandell recorded Wade on the Water, 50 years ago on his first solo album for Phillips. How many English bands recorded blues from earlier years by black performers? Wade on the Water and Amazing Grace, as are so many others, are in the Public Domain.

Cultural appropriation is another PC BS position that has no place in multi-cultural America. These people are unwittingly advocating a return to segregation.

I have some serious issues with a church being identified as a black or white church.

God does not identify his grace, love or blessings according to our pigmentation or culture.

I just don't like to go into black churches, because of the homosexuals presence, and their sexual terrorism, and obsession with another male phallic.

This is what separate the people, and them from God, or compel some into not going to these religious institutions.

T*********rs and homosexuality has infiltrated every institution in America, and we'll have accepted this madness.

Now, comes reverse r****m in the University and educational system, heterosexual females challenged this liberalism immorality.

The Democrats is behind all r****m, and the destruction of the family structure, and Humanity.

John Newton, a lewd and debached s***e trader almost died fighting a raging storm at sea. The good news is that he was instrumental in influencing other Englishmen to abolish s***ery in England. I don't think he ever knew the words the s***es were singing; only the tune remains to speak of his salvation.

Mr. Newton was given all Englishmen a spiritual warning about God's wrath, and the consequences of s***ery.

President Thomas Jefferson gave the same warning to his fellow country men, when he said "I tremble with fear, when I reflected that God is just, and His justice will not sleep forever".

Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
T'was blind but now I see
T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear
And Grace, my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils and snares
We have already come.
T'was grace that brought us safe thus far
And grace will lead us home,

Universities are taking God away from our children.
And this present society now has no God. Thus their morals are down buried deeply into the ground. That's now the lifestyle of the left. The radical -socialist-c*******t-democrats behavior have been so pervasively violent. This has to stop. We must renew our country back to God.

Amen! And not just universities, but government schools in general, aka public schools. That's why the teacher's unions are so opposed to Betsy DeVos and her support of charter schools.
Reagan tried to eliminate the Dept of Education but failed. Hopefully Trump will succeed in eliminating it in his second term. That'll be the only way to welcome God back into the classroom.
