Genesis chapter 38

Verse 1 - 5

Judah is the line that Christ will come through. Judah has two children out of wedlock. He has no discipline. God is in control. Everything will be fine.

Verse 6 - 11

Judah has three children, God slays the first two for wickedness Their mother was Canaanite anyway. Tamar, the wife of Judah’s sons, is told to remain a widow until Judah’s last son grows up.

Verse 12 - 19

Judah’s wife dies and he goes to shear sheep, which can be looked at as a euphuism for having sex. Judah reneges on his deal. Tamar dresses like a prostitute and follows Judah. Judah promises to give Tamar a goat in exchange for sex. He leaves his ring, bracelets, and staff as pledge.

Verse 20 - 23

Judah sends the goat and wants the pledge back. He can’t find the prostitute. Tamar has proof that Judah fathered her child.

Verse 24 - 26

When Tamar starts showing, Judah calls for public execution. Tamar shows the ring, bracelets, and staff, and says, the owner of these things fathered my child. Judah changes his mind.

Verse 27 - 30

Tamar is pregnant with twins, Pharez and Zerah.
