The failure of Biblically defined ethics

Fundamentalist Christians often accuse Humanism of causing a decline in ethical standards. They call for a return to “biblical morality.”

But an examination of the biblical God’s behavior shows that the Humanist system of ethics, which is based on reason and compassion, is far superior to the ethical standards contained in the Bible.

Based on biblical teachings, Christians say their God is a perfect example of love and justice. Some of the verses supporting their claim are I John 4:8 (“God is love”), Isaiah 30:18 (“the Lord is a God of justice”), and Psalm 18:30 (the Lord’s “way is perfect”).

Under Humanist ethical standards, however, many of the biblical God’s acts are considered cruel and unjust. Examples are the following: he condemned the whole human race because of the acts of two people (Gen. 3:16-23, Rom. 5:15); he drowned pregnant women and innocent children and animals at the time of the Flood (Gen. 7:20-23); and he k**led Egyptian babies at the time of the Passover (Exod. 12:29-30).

Subsequent to the Exodus, he ordered the Israelites to annihilate the men, women, and children of seven nations and steal their land (Deut. 7:1-2); he sent a plague that k**led 70,000 people because King David took a census (II Sam. 24:15); and he sanctioned s***ery (e.g., Lev. 25:44-46), polygamy (e.g., II Sam. 12:7-11), and religious persecution (e.g., Deut. 13:12-16).

He required the death penalty for such “crimes” as working on the Sabbath (Exod. 31:15), cursing one’s parents (Lev. 20:9), blasphemy (Lev. 24:11-16), homosexuality (Lev. 20:13), and not being a virgin on one’s wedding night (Deut. 22:20-21).

He repeatedly punished the Israelites with wars, famines, and pestilences (e.g., Ezek. 5:11-17); he sent two bears that k**led 42 children because they were making fun of a prophet’s bald head (II Kings 2:23-24); he sent a lying spirit to deceive King Ahab’s prophets (I Kings 22:19-23); he ordered that a woman’s hand be chopped off (Deut. 25:11-12); he required the torture and murder of his own son (e.g., Rom. 3:24-25); and he promised to send to eternal torture those who do not accept Christianity (e.g. Rev. 21:8).

Humanists are convinced that when such acts are equated with love and justice, the result can be a complete subversion of all civilized and enlightened standards of ethical behavior. People can then view the most inane and horrendous acts as perfectly acceptable, because the Bible’s “God of love” behaved similarly.

With the biblical God as a role model, no wonder virtually the whole Christian world saw nothing wrong with acts such as the Inquisition; the Crusades; the burning of witches; the religious wars in Europe; the pogroms carried out against Jewish communities; the ens***ement of Africans; the persecution and k*****g of homosexuals; the beating of children; the inhumane treatment of the mentally ill; the suppression of scientists; the use of torture in criminal interrogations; and the whippings, m********ns, and brutal executions of criminals. Those occurrences were a regular part of Christian society for hundreds of years.

Biblical teachings and their influence on history led the American patriot Thomas Paine to say about the Bible: “It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and, for my part, I sincerely detest it as I detest everything that is cruel.”

As a result of an increasing reliance on reason and compassion, humankind has developed ethical standards that are vastly more intelligent and humane than those contained in the Bible.

Humanity needs to continue that process rather than revert to barbaric and harmful ideas produced in an ignorant and superstitious past.

Gonna try this again, hey? OK, so will I.

Secular humanists never had any ethical or moral standards, other than those they make up themselves, which leaves us with a hodgepodge of ill defined choices on what might be right or wrong. In other words, in the feeble minds of humanists, morality can be one thing to one person and something entirely different to another. There are societies that love their neighbors and there are those who eat them.

Apart from a reference to 1 John (“God is love”) and Revelation, all of the other references you posted are from the Old Testament. Jesus had not yet come, and when He did, three centuries after the last prophet in the OT, He established a moral absolute that is infinitely superior to anything the secular humanists could possibly dream about. The moral doctrines of the Christian faith are based on the teachings of Jesus, not on events revealed in the OT.

Having said this, the events in the OT that you so despise, are in themselves lessons in morality.

The following comment

"With the biblical God as a role model, no wonder virtually the whole Christian world saw nothing wrong with acts such as the Inquisition; the Crusades; the burning of witches; the religious wars in Europe; the pogroms carried out against Jewish communities; the ens***ement of Africans; the persecution and k*****g of homosexuals; the beating of children; the inhumane treatment of the mentally ill; the suppression of scientists; the use of torture in criminal interrogations; and the whippings, m********ns, and brutal executions of criminals. is a supremely ignorant pack of lies.

Guy as pitiably h**eful as you could learn a few things from a dedicated and objective study of the Bible, but that is a forlorn hope. From the incessant and relentless grotesque memes and h**eful rhetoric you throw at us on this forum, all indications are that you are nonredeemable.

Under the L*****t Democrats and some unenlightened humanist rules of ethical standards, they have k**led over 50 million unborn babies in the USA alone since the passage of Roe v Wade. How many people have so-called humanists societies put to death in the 20th century?

There is much to gain and learn from each system of ethics. The best humanist ethics have their origins in religion and the wisdom of the Bible.

I disagree with your entire tirade! G*d does not need to conform to your, or anyone's, standards of morality! Second, we are personally responsible for our own action, we weigh the actions based on modern day expectation, make a determination and in the end, we must live by those decisions. I personally believe that the laws given in the 10 commandment are still relevant and the best foundations for forming modern laws, treatment of others, and finally our comport in day-to-day life!

Biblical teachings and their influence on history led the American patriot Thomas Paine to say about the Bible: “It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and, for my part, I sincerely detest it as I detest everything that is cruel.”

Conidering

Considering that the Old Testament was written by Bronze Age barbarians who lived in the habitat of the Marijuana plant, this is not surprising.

The P**********l Commission Report on Population and the American Future, which recommended removing restrictions on a******n and birth control, was done during Dick Nixon's administration too. Dick Nixon was a Republican. The Republican Party has strayed far from it's former values.

You cannot leave out the Old Testament. Torah is a picture of Yeshua (Jesus). He said he came not to do away with the laws, but to make them full. When God made the flood ot was to destroy Satan's work. Also it is possible that all man kind had been blemished with the "angels" who had taken women and had children who were giants. It is possible, if this is what happened, he was destroying that seed. I am not sure about this, but it is worth considering. Just like when God made the Garden of Eden and when he made things he said it was good. However, if you notice he never said the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was good. Perhaps Satan made that tree. It is impossoble to know everything reading the Bible. We apparently aren't supposed to know everything. I just know that Yeshua died for us so we can live and I hope I can know enough to be allowed into his new world. BTW why don't we use his real name that is Hebrew instead of the Greek name Jesus. You know the Bible is an Eastern book and you cannot read it with a western mind set and understand it. Just some thoughts.
