The courage required, inspired by their faith, to leave Islam, knowing there was a death penalty on the books, which could be imposed upon them, and subsequently to hold Christian church meetings, worshiping Jesus Christ, is a faith few of us know whether we could match, until or unless tested.

These men also faced the hostility and condemnation of relatives, friends and their entire Shi'ite Islamic culture.

Such a faith is real; it is doubtful whether they have the knowledge and understanding of the Trinity, as would a westerner who is culturally inundated in an environment that teaches and worships the Triune God, and has done so for generations, to say nothing of centuries, is doubtful...

If deprived of outside teachers, their adamantly strong Monotheistic (One Deity) cultural indoctrination, which in some ways is closer to Monism, will always differ in some aspects, i.e., the fine points, from a traditional U.S. understanding of "Christianity."

IMHO, God, however, has the power, through their Bible study, prayer, and the Holy Spirit, whom they received upon believing on Jesus Christ, to enlighten them.

Islamic Republic of Iran: Nine Christians sentenced to prison for a total forty five years for leaving Islam.

Imagine the outcry if nine Muslims had been jailed for leaving Christianity. But no one will take any significant notice of this.

In any case, it could have been worse. They could have been sentenced to death. The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law. It’s based on the Qur’an: “They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper.” (Qur’an 4:89)

A hadith quotes Muhammad saying: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him” (Bukhari 9.84.57). The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law according to all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence.

This is still the position of all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence, both Sunni and Shi’ite. Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the most renowned and prominent Muslim cleric in the world, has stated: “The Muslim jurists are unanimous that apostates must be punished, yet they differ as to determining the kind of punishment to be inflicted upon them. The majority of them, including the four main schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali) as well as the other four schools of jurisprudence (the four Shiite schools of Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-‘ashriyyah, Al-Ja’fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah) agree that apostates must be executed.”

“Sentences of nine non-Trinitarian Christians to 45 years in prison,” Mohabat News, December 22, 2019 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):

On Friday, December 20, 2019, Iran Human Rights Activist News Agency reported that Abdolreza Ali Haghnejad, Mohammad Islam Doust, Behnam Akhlaghi, Babak Hosseinzadeh, Mehdi Khatibi, Khalil Dehghanpour, Hossein Kadivar, Kamal Naemanian, and Mohammad Vafadar Kamal were sentenced by Mohammad Moghiseh, the head of Tehran Revolutionary Court, Branch 28, to a total of 45 years in prison.

The court was held on September 23 and the verdict was announced on October 15.

These Christian converts have objected to the verdict issued by the Tehran Revolutionary Court and are awaiting final appeal.

Babak Hosseinzadeh, Behnam Akhlaqi, and Mehdi Khatibi were arrested earlier in a house church meeting in Rasht on February 23, 2019.

The pressure of the Islamic Republic’s security and judicial institutions on Christians increases on Christmas Eve each year, including mass arrests, heavy sentences, summonses, and interrogations of Christians, the prohibition of religious ceremonies and celebrations as well as their economic activities such as selling Christmas decorations and Christian symbols."

God has said He can make His followers stand in lesser matters, and how much more is He able to give instruction to those who have the faith of a mustard seed?

Romans 14
Berean Study Bible

The Law of Liberty
(Matthew 7:1-6; Luke 6:37-42)

1Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on his opinions.
2For one man has faith to eat all things, while another, who is weak, eats only vegetables.
3The one who eats everything must not belittle the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted him. 4Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

5One man regards a certain day above the others, while someone else considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.
6He who observes a special day does so to the Lord;a he who eats does so to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.

7For none of us lives to himself alone, and none of us dies to himself alone.
8If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
9For this reason Christ died and returned to life, so that He might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

10Why, then, do you judge your brother? Or why do you belittle your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
11It is written:

“As surely as I live,

says the Lord,

every knee will bow before Me;

every tongue will confess to God.”b

12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

The Law of Love
(Ezekiel 14:1-11; 1 Corinthians 8:1-13)

13Therefore let us stop judging one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.

14I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean.
15If your brother is distressed by what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother, for whom Christ died.

16Do not allow what you consider good, then, to be spoken of as evil.
17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
18For whoever serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.

19So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to let his eating be a stumbling block.
21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything to cause your brother to stumble.c

22Keep your belief about such matters between yourself and God.d Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves.
23But the one who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that is not from faith is sin.e

Footnotes:

6 a BYZ and TR include and he who does not regard the day, to the Lord he does not regard it.
11 b Or will give praise to God; Or will give acknowledge God; Isaiah 45:23 (see also LXX)
21 c SBL, BYZ, and TR include or to be hindered or weakened
22 d Literally Keep the faith that you have to yourself before God
23 e Some manuscripts place Romans 16:25-27 here, or after Romans 15:33.

Christ's divinity is crucial. I am sure these Iranian prisoners absolutely believe that Jesus Christ is God.

They may be uninformed or iffy on the doctrine of the trinity, but if Jesus is not God, what's the point?

How could anyone forsake their ancestor's religion, their culture, the acceptance of their extended family, and endanger their own and their wife and children's lives for someone who was merely a good man, or even a prophet?

Thats what I was thinking.

Many former muslims have lost friends and family in becoming Christians. That epitomizes putting Christ first. These Iranians are good examples of that.

I don't think any Unitarian has ever claimed that about Christ...

Doubtful....

More likely they believe that Christ was who he was as depicted by the Koran... Later biblical Studies would only reinforce that belief...

I would turn your question around on you... But to what end?

I don't believe anyone ever came to a saving faith in Jesus Christ through the depiction of Him in the Qur'an.

Why would they forsake Muhammad, who is called the seal of the prophets, i.e. the final and greatest prophet for "Issa," one of 124,000 prophets, it is claimed?

List of Holy Prophets Names with their ages which are mentioned in Quran and Islam.

Faith is one of the pillars of Islam and we believe on all 124,000 Prophets whom Allah had sent for the guidance of people. Here we have list of 25 Prophets named in Holy Quran, and their ages, mentioned in Holy Quran and the narrations:

If you've read the Koran or studied Islam then you are aware that Jesus is perceived quite differently from the other prophets...
