The Chosen People
Learn Biblical Hebrew with us
What does it take to be chosen?

At the heart of the Torah is a very simple idea. It is an agreement between God and humanity called the covenant. If the children of Israel are loyal to the Lord, he will make them his chosen people. As we read in the book of Exodus, "Now therefore, if you will…keep my covenant, then you shall be a peculiar treasure unto me from all the peoples" (Ex. 19:5).

A Peculiar Treasure

In Hebrew, “peculiar treasure” is segulah (סְגֻלָּה). This is a very special word applied to one’s most precious possessions. It comes from the root SGL, from which we also get the word sagol (סגול) meaning “purple” – the color reserved for the most luxurious clothing in the ancient world. In the Bible, the term segulah is applied exclusively to God’s chosen people and we see throughout history, the Jewish people have always managed to emerge from persecution.

Learn the language of the Chosen People

This is the central theme of the holiday of Hanukkah, celebrated this week. Over 2,000 years ago a Greek king tried to outlaw Judaism, but a small group of valiant Jewish warriors named the Maccabees demonstrated the power of the chosen people, by overpowering a huge army.
