Genesis chapter 35

Verse 1 - 10

Jacob’s name changing to Israel becomes official. It was changed initially in Genesis 32:28. God has Jacob return to Bethel, where they first met in the 28th chapter. Before Jacob goes to Bethel, he has his servants get rid of their idols and change clothes. On the way, Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, dies.

Verse 11 - 15

America is Israel. We are a company of nations. Our states are larger than some countries. What we call Israel, it is actually Judah, is about the size of New Jersey. North Korea is about ½ the size of Colorado

Verse 16 - 20

On the way to Bethel, Rachel gives birth to another child. Rachel will die in childbirth. She names the child Benoni, which means son of my sorrow. Jacob names the child Benjamin, which means son of my right hand.

Verse 21 and 22

Reuben, Israel’s firstborn son, sleeps with Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid. This is wrong because Israel and Bilhah have two children.

Verse 23 - 26

Israel has twelve children: six from Leah plus one daughter, two each from Rachel and the two handmaids. Bilhah is Rachel’s handmaid. Zilpah is Leah’s. All of the children of Israel were not Jewish.

Verse 27 - 29

Isaac dies at the age of 180. Jacob and Esau bury him. They are both 120.
