Genesis chapter 34

Forward

Jacob and Esau have parted in peace. In this chapter, Dinah gets raped. Simeon and Levi kill every man in the city and take their wives, children, and livestock.

Verse 1 and 2

Jacob has one daughter from Leah, whose name is Dinah. She goes looking for other females, when Shechem, son of Hamor the prince, a Hivite, sees her. He takes her,and rapes her. Thus defiling her.

Verse 3 - 5

Shechem falls in love with Dinah and tells his dad he wants to marry her. When Jacob finds out, he says and does nothing. Her brothers won’t be so kind. Every man will die.

Verse 6 - 12

Hamor goes to Jacob to talk with him. Dinah’s brothers find out about the rape and get upset. Hamor wants to intermarry with the children of Jacob. Marrying the children of Canaan, in this case Hivites, was forbidden. Shechem tells Jacob and his sons that he will pay any dowry to have Dinah.

Verse 13 - 19

Jacob’s children deceitfully tell the Hivites to get circumcised. If they don’t, they will just leave. Hamor and Shechem are pleased with the offer. Shechem really wants to marry Dinah.

Verse 20 - 24

Hamor goes back to his people. He convinces his people that they will become wealthy by intermarrying with the children of Jacob. They all agree to and become circumcised. Apparently, in this culture rape is okay. Rape is never okay.

Verse 25 - 29

Simeon and Levi kill every man. They killed Hamor and Shechem and get Dinah. The other brothers take the livestock, women and children.

Verse 30 and 31

Jacob rebukes Simeon and Levi for what they have done. They come back with the fact that Dinah was raped by a Hivite.
