The problem with the KJV is that it’s in a language not spoken for 400 years. How many devotees of the KJV can go to a Shakespeare play and understand every word. Some Jacobean words have switched meanings over the past 4 centuries.

Beowulf is considerably earlier than the KJV. But yes, in high school we listened to Beowulf—and Chaucer—read in Anglo-Saxon and Old English.
