That is so true Lily, but very few if any compare todays immigrants with the 1700 settlers..

Usually, it is the late 19th century time frame that is used.

I think that may have been the time of most immigration to this nation..

Probably true, but those immigrants assimilated into this country. They did not try to re make this country into the one they just left! And they came for opportunity and to work, were willing to learn the language, and adapt to the customs. My grandfather had a loyalty card he was required to carry with him to show to any authority that asked him to. It was 1) renouncing the Kaiser, and 2) loyalty to this country and our laws and Constitution. When he died over 40 years ago, he still had that card-I think my sister has it now.

seems we are both 3rd generation to this country..

When I was a small boy, nearly all the people in the area had grand parents who still spoke the old country language, got newspapers from the old country and talked forever about the some day going back to visit..
My Granny was no different and we talked Norsk mostly when she was in the house.

"Par and Olie" was a comic strip in the Norwegian newspaper which came each month or week, which ever it was..

It seems natural to keep in the same ethnic group you are born to.. if you come from the depressed war/poverty racked countries we see most of today, the need is even stronger..

So, in a nutshell... I see little change or danger in the views of today immigrants and those from generations ago..

More differences between 3rd world and the US is true, when it was only a different part of Europe coming over, we still had the same insults, fears and false worries as are now dumped on the current groups..

I think that is probably true for all time. Going to a strange land with customs that may seem weird, and even if you are familiar with the language, there are nuances, and phrases with different meanings than you expect. I have met many immigrants in my time on this planet, and most are eager to learn and want to be an asset to this country-but, here we are talking about legal immigration. Those who wish to come here by any means may have solid reasons for doing so, but that they came without obeying our laws indicates total disrespect and disdain for people living here legally, either by birth, or by immigration. It will be hard for those people to gain the trust of those who came the "right" way. It is the people who insist on flying their own f**g, who want all the advantages and opportunities this country offers, but do not wish to assimilate in any other way that really irritate me. Worst, that Congress has failed to even begin to address the broken immigration system we have. and have done nothing for decades, all parties, that is so reprehensible. They use it as a political football, meanwhile having no regard for how it effects the millions of people living here.
