Animals are very important to older people my brother has never had any children his dogs are his children his Vietnamese wife loves the dogs just not like he does. When one he'd had for 8 years died he kinda went off the deep end for a while he also is a Vietnam vet 2 tours I think they keep him centered

That is very true, even if not in need, the animals cheer us up..

I have seen some strong people in tears over a pet..

Including a biker, who wore the colorsand tates all the stuff. cry when his dog got hit by a car and k**led.

Hope your brother is doing well.. as you know, we have a number of vet on opp who did that same chore, not always more than once.. he is a fine man and brother in arms. to many of us..
