I would like to retire or at least have the choice. But I lived too much in the moment, lol, with no plan for tomorrow. (It would likely be a hangover, so why bother.) Pretty much enjoyed myself as if there was no tomorrow. Now I am paying for it, in a way. But I am divided as to whether or not the price was worth it. I had my youth and thoroughly delighted in it. Being old and essentially broke, working until I die, a fair market value I must pay for my recklessness?
My house is paid for, so I have this as an edge. Yet vacations to Europe, or just a 12oz prime rib-eye, are out of the question. So my weekends are the only treasures I own. I treat them like an Island vacation--and then comes Monday...Tuesday...Wednesday...Thursday...and Friday, the stark reminders of my captivity.
Ya got me,Rumi...I can now look at you as a fellow member of the human race, and not just some liberal I don't agree with.
Yup,getting old ain't for sissies, but I believe in a Loving God who is going to make it all worthwhile. Until we disagree again,my friend.

At least you have a house, I’ve got a small camper/trailer. Otherwise we’re both pretty much in the same boat.
My Grandmother told me not to waste my youth, so I didn’t. Now at 62 with my dog and wife, work is the major distraction in life. Some fishing and hunting if I’m lucky but otherwise the garden gets my free time after work.
I do ponder my decision to have fun while I was able to, as opposed to working and saving for retirement . I realize that if I had waited there’s no way I could do all those fun things. This body can’t walk 8 hours a day with a shotgun or bow in my hand, or go trudging up and down rivers fishing. Thing is, at this age, I know what I’m missing. And I know I can’t do it anymore.
Well, no use crying about the future since it’s SO far away.

I get it Big dog. Love that line: "Well, no use crying about the future since it’s SO far away."

Amen. "All good things are gifts from God," that I can work to sustain myself til I die is his doing.

Thank you so much. Great response. And you also helped me remember my dad died 2 years after retirement at 62.
