I really think there are 2 problems. On is dropout rate. If you drop out, you have lost all that time you could have been doing something else, like learning weilding, a $30 an hour plus. You shouldn't major in history, classics, anthropology or French ect. as there are not many career paths.

Add under water to the wielding and watch the rate climb to $146,000 or better.

There are several college courses leading to financial stability, if not considerable success in life, that one might consider worthwhile: 1) Science and Mathematics; 2) Engineering; 3) Subjects leading to a Medical degree; and 4) Computer and Information Sciences. Of lesser value are courses in Literature, Writing, and "Communications" unless the student is exceptional and obviously headed for success in media or published authorship. If the student shows little ability to cope with intellectual challenges, going to college is a waste of both time and a large chunk of money.

I graduated from the school of hard knocks. Have been earning money since 8 years old. I have scars all over from the different jobs I've worked. Did a year of college and realized it wouldn't get me anywhere and went back to fishing, crabbing and construction.

I retired last year to take care of my wife and we aren't rich but the house is paid for, the car is paid for and the credit cards are paid off every month. I love that we get calls to decrease interest rates on our cards when I DON'T PAY INTEREST ON OUR CARDS because I pay the balance before the due date.

I was lucky. When I went to school we had wood shop, metal shop, automotive shop, electric shop and I even took a semester of Homemaking which was very useful later in life.

Today unless you are going into specific studies, College is a waste of time and money. In my daughter's case, her double degree did pay off but not for what she had studied. She lucked out but then she is good at almost anything she pursues. Mike

Peg, for once you and I are in total agreement. Sounds like you have experience. Mike

Have to agree that colleges should be kept for extended learning not for
a place where you play beer pong. There are some careers that require extended training. More often jobs are more of a on the job training but since it has gotten to the point that college has some people starstruck. Most jobs want a diploma holding employee so as to raise the appearance of the business. It would be better if you as a student want a degree go to a trade school. Then all that has to been done is the schools get accredited to ensure that the training is applicable.

With a high school diploma I retired earning close to $100K. In the 70's I was interviewing college students for a work study program. I asked one young man what his major was, "The History of the Drum" he responded. I suggested he leave college and go to the library. What I thought was more amazing is that someone was getting paid to teach that.

I have several friends who pursued senseless degrees and ended up working jobs that had nothing to do with their majors. When I was a teenager, my mother was smart and told us she didn't mind paying for college, but we had to major in subjects that would end up with gainful employment and our grades had to be at least a 3.0 average. All three of us graduated with good jobs at the end of our efforts. People (and government) are stupid and foolish when they support useless degrees.
