Hey it gives the troops finishing up their basic training something but a marksman badge to be proud of.

Isn't that what the National Defense Medal is for? I'm not totally convinced this is needed. It seems the military already passes out some medals like candy at Halloween. I'm interested in hearing what other veterans think.

I believe that President Trump wants to thank our Troops for the job they are doing at the Border...

Good for them they deserve that recognition.

I qualified expert with both the Carbine and the M1 rifle. I believe most of us attained the expert ranking with the M1, while I was in the Army. But fun to look back on now we are over the hill.

I'll give you a couple of ideas that back up my feelings. 1. You know those participation trophies handed out just for coming. 2. A purple heart isn't given to everyone who is wounded or you'd have almost everyone who was in battle wearing one. To argue with myself, it was hazardous duty, but you signed your life away. My final thought it's unnecessary, but wh**ever. You have to remember these recruits aren't the same tough guys we were and are.

There were 306 trainees in my Basic Company. Eight of us qualified expert.

That sounds more realistic. It's sort of like all the veterans I meet who were Navy Seals, Green Berets, Rangers, Deltas. It would lead one to believe everyone was special forces.

In Basic, it was virtually impossible to qualify Expert given the condition of the M-16s we had.

I entered the service in 1954 and the M1's we had were in great condition. I may have misspoke about how many attained the expert medal the first time they tried.

I'll admit that most of the city boys who had never shot a rifle before didn't qualify as Expert or Sharpshooter. But we had some who were excellent shots and also failed to qualify Expert. It's not like we had high powered scopes on the rifles, so it was difficult. Besides, AIT mattered more. That's where I qualified Expert on .45 cal.

As an MP, I also qualified expert pistol. It was not only the condition of the weapons, but the paucity of training, seeing as how so many of my fellow trainees had never fired a rifle of any sort. I come from a military family and I got my first rifle, a .22, when I was 7 years old. I was probably the only 7 year old in the county who could field strip his rifle.

P***e, Integrity, Guts! I was also White Hat, 95B!

I still have my short .22 cal rifle that I always took to the range with my father every month when he was on the police force. I first starting shoot when I was 4 years old. He also taught me how to clean a rifle at that age. In Basic, you could always tell who had never fired a weapon because they didn't know the first step about cleaning a rifle. Even after they had been shown how to clean it they would have dirty barrels. They thought once through was all they needed.
