Genesis chapter 24

Foreword

This was a patriarchal society and men made all the decisions. Even their children’s mates were selected by fathers. What is weird is that in America we pick our own spouses. Yet, a large percentage of marriages don’t last. In India, they have arranged marriages, they stay together all the days of their lives.

Verse 1 - 4

Abraham is an old man and has lived a good life. Isaac needs a wife. He put pleasing his father over his fleshly desires. To change your life, you must do the same the same thing. It is irresponsible to put pleasing flesh as your highest priority. If your priorities are eating when you are hungry, drinking when you are thirsty, and having sex when you find a willing partner; congratulations, there is no difference in your mindset, and that of a dog.

Verse 5 - 9

Abraham doesn’t want Isaac to marry a daughter of the Canaanites, where he currently lives. Abraham has his servants go back to where Abraham left Nahor, and find a wife there. Isaac;s wife must give water to Abraham;s servants, camels, and be willing to relocate, even though she never met Isaac. Isaac is not to leave.

Verse 10 - 14

The servant knows God is in control. He takes ten camels, and travels to the city of Nahor, has the camels kneel by a well, and prays for God to send Isaac’s wife. Do your best, and God will do the rest.

Verse 15 - 21

Before the servant finishes praying, Rebecca comes. She gives the servant water, and camels. She is a virgin.

Verse 22

The servant has made up his mind already, he wants to break out the jewelry. He just has to ask a few questions.

Verse 23 - 28

After he finds out Rebecca was from the house of Nahor, the servant knows God is at work, and praises Him.

Verse 29 - 31

This is the first time we hear of Laban. He will deal dishonestly with Jacob. His nephew who has yet to be born.:Laban takes charge when he finds out about Abraham.

Verse 32 and 33

The servant takes care of the animals, washes his feet, then sits down to eat. Before he eats, he wants to talk to Laban.

Verse 34 - 49

The servant informs Laban of his conversation with Abraham, his journey to Mesopotamia, his prayer to God, Rebecca being the answer to his prayers.

Verse 50 and 51

Laban and Bethuel, Rebecca’s father, realize this is God’s will, and give Rebecca permission to leave.

Verse 52 - 54

The servant worships God, breaks out jewelry and clothes, gives them to Rebecca, her brother and mother. He then asks for permission to leave.

Verse 55 - 60

Rebecca’s brother and mother ask ten days for Rebecca to leave. The servant wants to leave now. They agree to ask Rebecca. Rebecca wants to leave now. Children have a nasty habit of growing up.

Verse 61 - 67
