Genesis chapter 23

Verse 1and 2

Sarah, Abraham’s wife, dies at 127. Abraham and Isaac mourn and miss her. Sarah was 90 when Isaac was born. This is 37 years later, so Isaac is 37.

Verse 3 and 4

According to Genesis 10:15, Heth was a child of Canaan. One day, Abraham’s children will own all this land. But until then, everything is done decently and in order. Abraham is just a visiting stranger and doesn’t have anywhere to bury his wife.

Verse 5 and 6

The children of Canaan were wicked men. They were the socialist of that day. They want Abraham to bury Sarah in anybodies tomb. When another great man loses a wife, child, or himself, they will take Abraham’s sepulchre. This can be avoided if you own the land.

Verse 7 - 20

Abraham shifts the focus to the cave owned by Ephron, the son of Zohar. Ephron wants to give Abraham the cave. Abraham gets Ephron to set a value of 400 shekels of silver. Abraham buys the land and buries his dead.
