The Prison system is the perfect example.
But we *are* a socialist country. The root word, social, refers to Society. We are tribal people. We do not do well on our own- isolated. And the US hasn’t fought an honest war since 1945. I have so many younger friends who enlisted and served tour after tour in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some died there, others died after they returned. What does the Middle East War (2003 -present) have to do with our way of life? What were my friends fighting for?
I seriously welcome the opportunity to learn from you; to share our ideas.
Let’s start with “socialist.” For 17 of my 32 years working I taught public school. I served the public. I’ve been in the trenches of service to my country. Instead of a rifle I carried a baton, lesson plans, and an iPod. But service just the same.
Are services that benefit the whole society a bad thing or a good thing and how are we defining “social”?
Well, do you know what socialism is? I mean really... (show quote)

You statement of having taught public school for 17 of your 32 years, leads me to believe you don't know how old you seem to be. That means you taught public school since the age of 15. You must have graduated from college quite early. If that be the case, I assume, you never were taught the true history of this country and the true meaning of socialism. Please state if that is correct or incorrect.

Already rated as the 12th best president, and the most admired man for eleven years in a row.

Confusing but, read it as 32 working years.

You make a good point, but here is the dividing line. Socialism is when those services you speak of gain enough power to rule over you, to say what you WILL do and what you WON'T do, what you WILL pay and how much you WILL pay, then you become a s***e to the state, NOT a free citizen in a country where people are paid to handle social services and otherwise, leave you alone. It's the difference between freedom and tyranny.

A very basic, ideological point and definitely worth thinking about.

Obama the leader? Really??? LOLOL!!!!!!!!!

The guy who caved on the red line in the sand, who would have perpetuated ISIS for decades, who was willing to give Iran nukes in a predetermined time period (which they have obviously never adhered to), who would have raised taxes again, who allowed the nations of NATO to fail to pay their fair share, who continued Bush's policy of democratizing the ME through regime change after regime change, etc, etc?

That "leadership?????"

The guy who gave us shovel ready jobs at $400,000 each, who threw money are "green" companies who failed even with the free money, who made the deal to let big pharma maintain their monopoly of drugs in the USA? That "leadership?????"

As for taxes, Trump has given up more in salary and sheer income being president than you could ever have paid in taxes, ever.

Red line.... read more, that red line demand was met.. while President Obama was waiting for congress approval to act, the demand was met.. thanks to Russia who moved in and made the same demand.
So with the demand submitted to, the bombing did not have a point.. congress dropped the bill.

ISIS.... ended by President and military strategy extended over the next administration..

Iran... great accomplishment, every nation and every intel agency all agree that it was working until trump withdrew our nation from the agreement.. now we face a near certainty of military confrontation with Iran.
Only the truly stupid wish for war.

WOULD have raised tax.... you do not recall President Obama tax cuts do you?
Yes, taxes must be raised, no one likes that but when we do not pay our bills we lose the position as a leader in the world.. when we default on a debt, do you find that a good thing..

NATO.....Nothing was changed, the NATO nations said YES, we will pay as was agreed in 2010 with President Obama and then trump said wow, am I great and wonderful...

Mideast.....oil wars, you people seemed to love this spreading of Democracy until we could not get away and still control that oil..

The jobs program worked very well up in Minnesota.. if your state did not allow things to work in your state then that is not President Obama fault, it is the fault of your state government.. if GOP then McConnell was the brain behind it..

Green companies... the program you are trying to remember was a money maker. You only look at the failure of Solaria and think that was the whole package.. we the taxpayers made a very good return on that program..

Big Pharma.... they have owned congress for 30 years or so, Bush plan D with no negotiation on drug prices comes to mind.. so much blame, go ahead get both parties on this one..

trump....Salary, so he says. but he makes more off his golf outings then the salary would ever amount to..

I have paid an amazing amount of taxes.. so I will bet that your remark about orange income given up, to my ever paid taxes could well be wrong..

What a bunch of twisted hooey.

How bout a link or something as regards to your red line theory? LOL!

And ISIS ended by Obama? What a laugh. Trump gave the military to OK to take out ISIS. Obama wouldn't let them do anything without his expressed permission and his rules of engagement were reminiscent of Vietnam.

You're a true joke permy. I have never seen such a mishmash of bunk in my entire life. Who is "you people?" Fact is, Obama tried to continue the democratization of the ME and further destabilized it by pulling out of Iraq, essentially creating ISIS, who he then could have obliterated but didn't. And finally admit it, the sheer speed with which Iran has now gone beyond what the agreement limited them to only confirms what we have always know; they never, ever intended to keep the agreement, which didn't even allow us to look at their military bases for evidence of continued enrichment. What a stupid agreement which was never ratified or agreed to by Congress, by the way.

What world of pure fantasy are you living in? The MSNBC/CNN world of pure fiction??? OMG!!!

As a result, socialism doesn't reward people for being entrepreneurial. It struggles to be as innovative as a capitalistic society.

A third disadvantage is that the government has a lot of power. This works as long as it represents the wishes of the people. But government leaders can abuse this position and claim power for themselves.

Exactly! Capitalism recognizes human nature and seeks to accommodate it. And human nature always includes wanting to be free to express oneself in wh**ever manner one chooses. So capitalism allows maximum individual freedom consistent with an orderly society.
Socialism is concerned, not with the individual, but with society as a whole. Which effectively disenfranchises ALL individuals. That's why socialist societies have to stamp out religion, or individualism. They always call their goal, 'utopia'. Because it's unattainable.
Individual freedoms, allowed by capitalism, have elevated the lives of more people worldwide than any other system ever devised by man.
