I was raised a liberal in Southern California, graduated HS there in '74. I basically had the same question as you. My first Aha moment was discovering what the Constitution really did for us, and mankind. I still say it is "the best form of government devised by man." To really understand it's value, it needs to be understood in the world view of it's formers.

Welcome aboard. My personal views range from extreme Left to extreme Right, depending on the subject. However I'm leaning middle right more and more lately as I watch today's Democrat party dividing the country into little groups and pitting them against one another then claiming that only they can bring everyone together. It all sounds good but it just doesn't work in reality, maybe in a thousand years or so humans will be ready for 'We're all the same' we just ain't ready for that yet. Republicans have their faults but at least they're more rooted in present day reality, that is individualism. Any one who says that "We're all equal" is an i***t.
