Trump ‘not going to fire’ Kellyanne Conway over Hatch Act allegations

After White House counselor Kellyanne Conway faced calls for her termination this week over alleged violations of the Hatch Act, the president stepped in to relieve some of the pressure.

During an interview with Fox & Friends on Friday, President Donald Trump assured Conway that her job is safe.

“No, I’m not going to fire her,” said Trump. “I think she’s a terrific person, she’s a tremendous spokesperson, she’s been loyal, she’s just a great person.”

OSC calls for Conway firing
This past Thursday, the independent government watchdog Office of the Special Counsel (OSC) filed a memorandum recommending Conway’s “removal from federal service” for being a “repeat offender” of the Hatch Act.

With the exceptions of the president and the vice president, the Hatch Act prohibits those working in the executive branch, like Conway, from engaging in certain political activities. Using one’s position in the executive branch to influence a political campaign would be one example of disallowed behavior.

The OSC claims that over the past few years Conway has violated this act on a number of occasions.

Alleged violations
One of the alleged violations took place in November 2017. During an interview on Fox & Friends, Conway called Doug Jones, who at the time was running for the Alabama Senate, “weak on crime” and “terrible for property owners.” It should be noted, however, that she did not endorse his opponent, Roy Moore.

Another alleged violation took place more recently, when Conway spoke to reporters about 2020 hopeful Joe Biden, bringing up his record on various issues, like immigration. “I’m not concerned about Joe Biden,” she said in summation.

On that occasion, Conway also spoke dismissively of the OSC’s attempts to use the Hatch Act against her. “If you’re trying to silence me through the Hatch Act, it’s not going to work,” she said, adding, “Let me know when the jail sentence starts.”

Trump weighs in
Along with confirming Conway’s position, Trump also defended her against the OSC’s allegations.

“It looks to me like they’re trying to take away her right of free speech, and that’s not fair,” he said, while arguing that Conway should be able to respond to any question posed by the press, including political attacks.

“She’s got to have a right of responding to questions,” Trump concluded.

She has a right to respond to questions posed by the enemy of the people. Kellyanne and I are together on this. Never tell the t***h when a simple lie will better serve your purpose. We can't tell the difference anymore anyway. If anyone takes note of our blathering, we can just call their rendition "f**e news". I look forward to sharing a jail room with her. I think she will make a terrific roommate, believe me.
