Amos chapter 1

Verse 1 and 2

Amos was a shepherd, not a priest. God uses whom He chooses. Another name for Uzzariah was Azariah. He didn’t prophecy for a long time. Soon, Israel would be removed from the map. Only Judah would remain.

Verse 3 - 5

Syria and the children of Jacob had a long history, mostly negative. If you are against God’s children, you are against God. God’s children should not retaliate when treated poorly. God fights our battles. We should endure until God lifts us up.

Verse 6 - 8

Gaza was a city of the Philistines. They waged war against the children of Jacob for thousands of years . The Philistines worshipped man made statues.

Verse 9 and 10

All of the enemies of God’s children have an enemy in God. Tyre was another city of the Phoenicians. It was conquered by Alexander the great. It still exists today.

Verse 11 and 12

Esau is Edom according to Genesis 36:1. Edom means red. Esau is the father of the Russian people.

Verse 13 - 15

According to Genesis 19:38, the offspring of the incestuous union of Lot and his younger daughter was named Benammi. He became the father of the children of Ammon. He and his cousin Moab are the last survivors of Sodom and Gomorrah.
