Seven in the Bible

What do the Sabbath, Joshua’s march around Jericho and the Jewish festival of Shavuot (Pentecost) have in common? They are all connected to the number seven (sheva). And it’s not just in these stories. In dozens of other Scriptural instances, the number seven plays a central role. In the Gospel of John, Jesus speaks of himself using the phrase “I am” seven times. What is so special about seven?

A sacred numeral to swear by

In ancient Israel, the number seven represented divine perfection. It was considered a powerful, unbreakable number because it could not be divided by common small numbers, which people used to count on a single hand. The word for seven in Hebrew - sheva שבע- is linked to shevua שבועה- an oath. When someone wanted to make a very strong promise, they would take an oath as though to say: “Let the divinely perfect number seven be my witness that I…”

The power of reading Hebrew

This month Jews around the world are celebrating Shavuot (שבועות), where the Israelites received the Torah, 7 weeks after their exodus from Egypt. The Bible is full of sevens. When you read the Bible in translation it is like holding a single candle. But reading the Bible in Hebrew, you possess a powerful seven branched Menorah (Ex. 25:37).

Thanks for sharing. I was taught also that Seven was the number of completeness or perfection. God created for six days and rested on the Seventh because His creation was complete.

Good info bahmer. I was also taught that the number 7 was perfection. And that there is also great significance in the number 3 - the triune God, Christ’s ministry was 3 years, He rose on the third day... Lots of examples.
