Despite the rhetoric that welcomed migrants at the start of the year, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration has stepped back from handing out humanitarian visas and is placing more restrictions on migrants, and upping detentions and deportations. “The situation is extremely serious, and we don’t know what to do anymore,” says Andrés Ramírez, head of Mexico’s refugee agency COMAR. In fact, the organization estimates that ….
"When the first caravan came, the whole town was dedicated to helping them — people were handing out food and clothes. Now no one wants them here,” says Marta Fourzale, owner of a local hotel and a lifelong resident of Tapachula.
Tapachula, a border city in Chiapas, is on the front line of the impending crisis. This border town has for decades seen a slow but steady stream of migrants from beleaguered Central American countries such as Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. The caravan in October last year was unprecedented, but most of those migrants were just passing through, abiding by the idea of safety in numbers. But people kept coming, in smaller groups. Today, not only are there Central Americans in the queues for attention at COMAR but also residents of countries such as India and Angola, Eritrea, Ghana, Cameroon and other African nations. And my friends, many are not friends of the US or Mexico.
My opinion, for what it is worth, we to include Mexico are approaching the problem in the wrong way. We can continue to battle for funds to build a wall, and eventually we will have a very tall wall...... I am betting on Trump! In the meantime, the tide of people has to be stopped. We have to do more than play the part of the Dutch Boy putting his finger in the D**e. The cause of the problem has to be addressed and it will require the Central American Presidents to meet with our President and figure out how to to help these nations. Hopefully we can come to some mutual agreement (not war or outing current leadership) that can give those nations a
hand up. So, perhaps in exchange we could negotiate a sell of produce or lighter tariffs on imports/exports..... these nations are rich in agriculture.... But, the problem is they have little excess that they can export.... they consume more than what they can grow. Better field management (education) could help change this. Perhaps we can give them a break on import taxes as they buy the majority of their nontraditional products (cars, appliances, electronics, etc.) from the US. Education will help (trade schools), investments into their business is another sustainable alternative, perhaps we can divert funds that is already ear marked for humanitarian efforts in other nations. My thought, we give billions to nations that frankly do not need, they are "developed" nations like Israel, Germany, Italy, and other European nations. I am not suggesting that we allow those nations to become dependent on the US or Mexico, I am suggesting a "hand up" not hand outs.
This was off the top of my head, and I know there are deeper thinkers on OPP than me. And someone will point out that any money invested will wind up in the pockets of their government officials or military.... I accept that, but I also accept that these are people who need help. Perhaps the people will realize that only they can change their leadership and running away is never a good solution.
