You're Driving Waaaaay Too Fast

In the past four days, our main lane and frontage road cameras have captured 37 crashes in the southwest quadrant of San Antonio's freeway system.

This includes US 90 and Loops 410 and 1604, but only within the southwest quadrant of the city.

Most of these crashes were rear enders but there were 9 very serious crashes with multiple injuries.

Luckily, there were no fatalities.

I'm posting this info because I hope that it will cause you to think safety, the next time you get behind the wheel.

I normally don't view the video data we collect.

Our techs process the data and proof each download for quality.

It is then sent to our Austin headquarters where the videos are studied at length.

Automobile accidents are not really the purpose of our capture surveys, but they are documented in our final reports.

Today, I 'did' view some of the video and it is critically obvious that people are just driving too fast and they seem to behave as though everyone should get out of their way and give them the road.

They have no respect for drivers who prefer to travel within the speed limits and I have seen it over and over again and again.

We set up one of our new radar classification units when we started.

To mount this equipment we use DOT officers to divert traffic while we make the installation.

These officers tell a grim tale about San Antonio drivers.

And they confirm that speeding drivers are the worst violators and cause the most carnage.

So before you go tearing down the freeway in a hurry and driving like a scalded maniac, just take a deep breath and think.

Think safety.

For yourself and for the rest of us Goobers who are just out here trying to make a living.

San Antonio sounds a bit like Atlanta, Ga. They’ll run over you if you don’t keep up their speed. Road stage is deadly, folks. Slow down. This was good advice.

The drivers here on Long Island N.Y. must be some of the best drivers anywhere.
Considering the number of cars on the road and the reckless speeds that people drive at, there are rather few accidents.
Since I drive for a living, I get to see the crazies and the stupids, (my discriptions), and I’m amazed there aren’t wrecks everywhere!

I'm retired and no longer a part of the ratrace. It's amusing to watch them scurrying to and fro, as if it's a life and death scenario.

The rats are scurrying because they can't plan and manage their time, thus they're always feeling pressured by time. And they believe they should be immune to driving laws and speed limits.

You make a very good point. That’s a large part of the rat “race”. Leave a few minutes earlier to allow for the unexpected.

Yep. I lived in San Antonio and Leon Valley and Loop 410 and 1604 can be very scary! An old joke, not very funny, is that the speed limit on the interstates is directly proportional to the mood of the patroller. Many times I had been afraid to go at the post limit, so would move with traffic as it was often streaming alon 10 to 15 MPH OVER the posted llimit. And then there's the Austin bypoass hwy 130, where the limit is 80 MPH and there have been several terrible accidents as feral pigs cross that road, especially in the mornings and at sunset.
