For Californians....

A student of mine went on a two week trip to California (LA) this past February...

We were having a lesson and she mentioned that cockroaches are considered lucky in America..

I found this bizarre... Thought maybe she meant ladybugs or scarabs or something...

But nope.. She definately meant cockroaches.. Found me a picture of the suckers and all...

She stayed with a host family and found cockroaches in the bedroom and bathroom... She says that they told her they consider them lucky and welcome them into their house...

Before I condemn them as filthy liars I thought maybe I ought to ask some Californians...

When I went down to Mexico there were geckos in the apartments I stayed in and people let them be... Didn't say they were lucky... Just that they ate the pests.... I am the same way with spiders (much to my wife's displeasure...)...

So...
Are cockroaches lucky?
Or beneficial in any way?

I appreciate any input... Thanks

Not a Californian, but instead, a Texan.

If I never saw another cockroach, I would not be disappointed.

Good morning Kyle!
I've never heard that, Are those Californian's from Mexico? Maybe they have a different attitude?
Now that's what I call really going with the flow, there(Mexico).... they're called Cucarachas Amazing the human capacity to rationalize anything, they're bugs that will reproduce to the point of carrying away your house if not addressed immediately.

I never saw them until I moved to the south and quite naive. Spotted some in the barn and mentioned it to a local they called them palmetto bugs, which somehow didn't sound so bad, my husband and I looked at each other puzzled look and said " I think those things are cockroaches found out too that everyone here gets their house sprayed, or else.

People like snakes too but I wouldn't call them good magic and keep em in my house, we have lots of those too in the south, all these warm weather critters we'll be seeing more of as water and temperatures rise...

So you eat spiders? hmm tasty.

Native Californian. Cockroaches aren’t considered lucky - not anywhere unless you have a few screws loose.

Texas had the biggest cockroaches I’ve ever seen. Everything’s bigger in Texas.

I grew up in Indiana. Cockroaches were considered the ultimate in filth. As far as I know, they don't bite people or harm them. They might carry diseases. I don't know. We were in Clearwater, Fl, a few years ago and ate in a Mexican restaurant. They had great food and while we were eating we saw several cockroaches running around and going up the wall. We never went back. Where I live now, Michigan, I have known a few people who have experienced bedbugs. That is a problem. They had one heck of a time getting rid of them. They finally had to have a commercial pest control firm come in and take care of it. The word is - don't sit your suitcases on the floor in hotels. Bedbugs will bite people!

Rose42, I agree. Seems there are a lot of loose screws in the GREAT STATE of California.

You'll get no argument from me.

A team of six Texas cockroaches could pull a conestoga wagon across the American Southwest.

You eat spiders? Huh, I bet they taste like chicken. Cockroaches and I are mortal enemies, if I see one in (or near ) my home, it's carpet bombing time.

I remember stepping on them and they weren’t immediately crushed - there was a bit of a pause they were so big. Lol

Morgan, you should make that suggestion in california for apparently they have not learned that these bugs
carry diseases like the PLAGUE and there have been recent reports of occurrences in SF and LA.

Let's face it, California, especially LA and SF, has much bigger problems than Las Cucarachas!

Snakes are among the best insect control out there. So selecting nonpoisonous snakes to protect around your property is a good idea. Also make sure not to k**l rat snakes, they are nonpoisonous and eat rats and mice (hence the name)
